…wouldn’t it be easier to just dump the crew into barracks and/or crop out the left and lower parts of the screen, which ought to take like a minute with any paint prog? Just a thought. :|

Turrets are also “empty” on the inside save for the crew and gun and suchlike, just like this one. As are various open superstructures already in the game.
