You are supposed to use an apostrophe to form the plural of numbers when expressed in numerical digits (3′s) and of abbreviations (A’s and O’s, as any denizen of Oakland or Baltimore knows). The modern dropping of the apostrophe–no matter that it is allowed in current manuals of style–is a lazy shortcut introduced by those intent on sowing confusion and lack of order and rules in the language–and in the world in general. Clarity of expression should be a chief aim of writing.
