Not actually used during the war. Hardly necessary anyway, given the “emotionally significant events” direct hits from six-inch HE shells tended to produce IRL.

Well…Objekt is the russian nomenclature for prototypes. IS-3 was named Objekt 703 while being a prototype and IS-3 when it came in production. Stands to reason that the SU variant(self propelled gun – samokhodnaya ustanovka) while in it’s prototype stage would be named 704 and probably should have been named something else once in mass production.

It was used to differentiate the ISU-152, based on the IS-1/2 chassis, from its predecessor, the SU-152, which was based on the KV chassis, while in service.

The Obiekt 704 was a prototype and not a production vehicle, hence the designation.
