How do you distinguish hero from murderer? Apart from obvious cases where criminals were enlisted. Most of the time War Hero is someone who was good at his job. That means, to some extent, killing someones siblings. For his countrymen that person is an hero. But mother crying over her son’s massacred body can see only murderer. I believe that some of these men were real Heroes that saved many lives. But there were probably also victims killed by these ‘heroes’.

I’m from Poland, and I have seen many memorials and places where people were slaughtered by both armies. My grandmother and her sister (aunt?) on many occasions described horrors of the war. Death, starvation, rapes, and omnipresent violence. They also taught me not to hate these two nations for sins of their ancestors. Now, I can understand that these people were fighting for their country, and I respect them as elders. But I have no respect for any German Nazi or Red Army soldier. For me such soldier is oppressor and murderer of my ancestors.

I can understand point of view of the ‘westerners’. For them CCCP was an ally. Inconvenient one, but still an ally. For me and many of my countrymen CCCP is equally bad, or even worse, than Nazi Germany.

By the end of the war, Red Army was bled of the best men and was so short on manpower it drafted criminals and such. Two such “soldiers” tried to steam my grandfather’s horse in Czechoslovakia – their own officer shot them in front of grandfather, because that was the only way to keep the discipline in the unit. That doesn’t change the fact that some of the veterans were real heroes.

qrak I respect your opinion, but there’s a reason we look back into the past. To learn from it. To see what these men lived through. What hardships they had, and survived. Their lives right now aren’t that great. I can’t imagine how bad their pensions are.

I have no problem with these videos. They are interesting, and I get to see some people who were like my great grandfather, and grandfather/grandmother who were also around during ww2 in ukraine/russia at the time. To see, and hear what they went through gives me a little more insight than what you would find in a book.

At the end of the day. You don’t need to be apart of an army to be a murderer. Since the dawn of time humans have been killing each other over simple things. If it wasn’t a german or russian soldier who killed someone in you family it could be your neighbor who did it. It doesn’t matter since killing is in our blood.
