The “April Fools” part of Karl was not Karl and the map but how they introduced Karl and the map. The joke was that everyone has always been complaining about the game not being balanced so they created the most balanced game. Everyone gets the exact same tank with a crew that never levels and has no gold ammo. And on a completely balanced map neither side had an advantage because the map was symmetrical.

And because of how that went they are now deciding limited time special event modes are enjoyed by people.
