I saw this documentary of the type 99 though it dosent go into any technical and design detail but it does show the history of the project pretty well.

The Pakistani picture was my favorite.
It showed that the nifty modern wedge-shaped turret is just a sheet-armor facade.
Underneath can be clearly seen the old hemispherical turret. Like a Volkswagen beetle kit to look like a Ferrari – underneath it’s still a beetle. :P

Still, if it stops HEAT rounds and saves lives, then it does its job! :)

WZ-120 = Type 59 with 120mm

Not smoothbore though… ANY smoothbore tank would be hilariously OP. especially when firing ATGMs.
