I thought the same, if he did see something (new or old, it does not matter) it could simply be in that position and he mistook it, the “manholes” he mentions on the rear could be the driver and radioman hatches

The heavy tank looks like poorly recognized tank in transport position i.e. with turret facing backwards (the report mentions they were seen on the freight train).
Some IS’es maybe?
