Hello everyone,

those, who follow WoWp news probably know about the Wargaming Dornier plan. The Royal Air Force museum at Cosford (with Wargaming financing) has decided to basically restore a German Dornier Do-17 bomber, that was fished out of the English Channel in order to show it to public. The estimated costs of the project will be cca 250k GBP (cca 300k EUR)

  1. Well if they will put it in a museum afterwards, I say that this is a good idea :) Plus, if I was one of the WG people, I would restore it and use it as a WoWP or WG promo plane with nice decals and all :) :)

    • Decals? On the restored frame? Jeeez no that is the only Do-17Z out there so far I know, they should expose it in the colours of it’s former Geschwader. But credits to WG of course.

    • Restoring is if there actually is any part of the real plane left, and looking at that picture, there is a big part of the original plane left, so they will be restoring it, because they will just add the parts that are missing.

If they would be rebuilding one, then they would be using completely new materials for it and building it completely from scratch.

      • Under UK rules, you can restore an airframe to flight if all you have is the data plate.

I thought the plan with the Dornier was to prevent any further deterioration but not to rebuild it as such.

    • You mean that wing in Berlin? But the Gigant is a transport-plane, no direct link to WoWp.

If WG were cool they’d build something like the E-100 or O-I from drawings and such.

      • There’s that little bit of a difference between restoring historically valid items to a finer state and actually creating made-up (doesn’t matter how much) stuff.
Sure the e100 chassis is/was alive and all, but that would still be much closer to creating new shit. And you can’t really justify it in the case of the axis forces – lots of people won’t really understand the point of creating that stuff.
So, yeah – kudos for the do.17, hope they will do more of this stuff.

    • I think that might cost a smidge more ;)

I’m glad to hear someone is showing some love for the Dornier though, I learnt about it from an old lady at an air show, she told me she loved going to them and tried to catch every air show in the south east of England that she could. She was really enraptured and excited to tell me about the only Do17 being found and (at the time) preparing to be pulled out of the channel.

So for history’s and her sake, I’m happy about WG’s decision!

      • The WoWP engine can’t handle planes with two or more rear gunners? Where did you read that? It can already handle 1 AI gunner, why not 2?

  2. 300k does not sound like all that much. you could put that into an extremely rare car like a Duesenberg model J. Aircraft cost a lot more to anything to.
