Leopard Prototype in Action

Thanks to Coolathlon for this one.

Check this out – quite a rare video of the Leopard prototype from the Gruppe A, still designated as “Standartpanzer”, already equipped with the L7 gun. The video also lists its characteristics:

Weight: 36 tons
Length: 9,22 meters
Width: 3,25 meters
Height: 2,22 meters
Specific ground pressure: 0,8 kg/cm2
Power-to-weight ratio: 23 hp/t
Range: 570 km
Gun: 105mm L7A1

The video also contains various comparisons between the prototype and other tanks. Very interesting really.

  1. Seriously why couldn’t they make the Group B prototype with the 90mm gun the premium MT8 instead of the PoS that is the hitlerpanter?

    • 1. get an already existing tank
      2. introduce a premium copy of it
      3. Profit with 0 investment

      that’s why. no work needed.

      • Not only that, Historically the Panther 88 is more popular, or at least thats what WG thought. Jingles always disliked the T7 panther for not being real, and demanded an 88 version.

        • Well, the T7 Panther is “real” only when you use the regular Ausf G turret and the 7,5 cm L/70 gun.

Panther never had 8,8 cm gun, it was only a proposal.

    • Standart is correct, im German.

btw: The range is 570 km, not 355- thats the range in miles.

      • lol, no, standart is actually NOT correct. Its a silly mistake even many germans make but yes, Standardpanzer is right, it’s even written like that in the damn video ffs. :P

      • “Standartpanzer” is not correct. That’s a common misspelling.

But to be fair: Etymologically both words have the same origin. The word for a flag (Standarte) comes either from “Standort” (so the place where a flag was erected) or old Franconian “standhard” (“standfest”, “stable”, “steadfast”). It went into French (“estandart”) and then into English (“standard”). Gradually the meaning became ambiguous, not only referring to a flag, but also to a norm, because the first established norms came in the name or the sign of the king (which is “the flag”). So in the end, the originally Germanic word got re-imported into German language, so we have two different words, making a clear distinction. The word “Standard” is used for a norm and the word “Standarte” only refers to a certain kind of flag. In the English language both is still called “standard”.

Anyways, the word “Standart” doesn’t exist and never existed. It’s a common misspelling. It’s either “Standard” or “Standarte” (depending on what is meant – a norm or a flag).

        • “Standart” could also be used to descrive a certain way of standing. Yeah, german :D

          • Yeah, well, you could make this kind of compound “Stand + art” (a way to stand; “headstand”, “handstand”), but then the syllabification would be different (you could even hear this in the way it is pronounced): Stan|dard ; Stan|dar|te ; Stand|art.

You could also create this word as a means to describe different types of stalls/booths (Verkaufsstände) like “Obststand” (fruit stand) or “Gemüsestand” (vegetable stall) etc.

The possibility to form the word “Standart” as a compound (Kompositum) exists – German language is famous for this, hence all the funny and absurdly long German words like “Donaudampfschiffahrtselektrizitätenhauptbetriebswerkbauunterbeamtengesellschaft” or “Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz”. By composition you could create arbitrary stuff.

But in the end, “Stand|art” isn’t a regular German word. You won’t find it in the Duden/dictionary (at least not yet).

  2. At 6:43, does the Leo PTA have a adjustable suspension? If that is the case, I suggest a gun depression buff to reflect this just like the STB-1.

  3. It looks like WG did justice to the Leopard proto’s speed, agility, and terrain crossing ability. That tank hauls buns! :-o

    • I think the DEFA is the AMX 30, the good power to weight ratio would indicate this, but I’m not sure.

      • German wiki says: „Direction des Etudes et Fabrications d’Armement“ (DEFA)
So, thats just the guys who order Weapons right?

I found it on the AMX-13 page…. so who knows.

  4. Really interesting video overall. Pictures and especially video material of this tank is extremely rare.
