Storm talks about 9.1

Source: http://world-of-kwg.livejournal.com/293768.html

Hello everyone,

Storm is asking for your feedback on the 9.1 test, specifically:

- game performance and possible loss of FPS
- new map
- new gun sounds
- new turret and shell sounds, new sounds of Hellcat and Jackson
- and of course bugs

Here Storm states that the bug where the screen turns black in battle is known, it will be fixed.

Regarding the gun sounds, Storm writes that many are complaining about them and say that they are bad. Storm emphasizes that the gun sounds are in the test to gather playerbase feedback. The sounds are recorded in real life (some “sound photoshop” was used only for the shells of the largest calibers). The volume of the sounds as it is is on their limit – any louder and they will begin to distort. Storm states that according to player feedback, many don’t like it the way it is in the test and it’s possible it would be more correct to make unrealistic “Hollywood” sounds instead (SS: personally, I actually like the new sounds).

Regarding the optimization, in this round, about ten small fixes and optimizations were implemented, that should affect the performance positively on most computers. This wasn’t in the early patchnotes, as it was unknown how these “fixes” would work for the majority of players. According to first feedback, the majority of players reports very positive influences, which according to Storm means Wargaming is moving in the right direction.

Storm also adds that they found a way, how to without too much digging fix the lags when you switch from arcade to sniper mode. They are working on the fix right now.

From the discussion:

- it’s not yet sure whether the aforementioned arcade/sniper mode lag fix will be there in 9.1 release
- developers are working on more optimization
- crew “not forgetting previous tank training” (SS: as in, would stay trained for tank A even when retrained for tank B) option will not be implemented, it’s not economically profitable for WG
- same goes for buying previously purchased tanks for half (selling) price
- regarding the missing sound echo (you were used to from old sounds): devs added “echo zones” so for example in closed areas the sound will echo
- Storm states that in the “historical realism gun sounds mod”, the quality of samples was not very good and the sounds were collected from all over the place, Wargaming will not cooperate with Gnomefather, Storm personally doesn’t like the sound mod very much apparently (“When it comes to me personally, this mod stresses me sometimes by its ‘forced sound’” SS: as in, too much intensive sounds – Storm adds that atmosphere is good but he can’t play with it for long)
- regarding historical sounds, Storm adds that War Thunder also has historical sounds of guns, yet everyone likes it there
- it’s not an option to have two sound sets (historical one and “Hollywood” one), the work would immediately double by that
- the sound of turret turning is there for all tanks, in sniper mode
- a player was complaining that he can’t now recognize a difference between a sound 300 meters away and 600 meters away, Storm counters that he personally can easily
- Storm states he can’t say exactly which tanks were the gun sounds recorded from, it was some sort of BMP and T-72 and some others
- apparently, Ruinberg on Fire will get some brighter lighting, Kharkov is brighter than Ruinberg on Fire
- stock tanks will not get reduced MM spread (“the team would be very happy to see a stock tank as their top vehicle”)
- the turret turning sound doesn’t activate when you move a turret (in sniper mode) just a little – this is intentional, so that the turret sound doesn’t irritate you, when you are trying to aim precisely. Furthermore, it’s historical – fine turret movement was performed by manual hand cranking and that almost cannot be heard in a tank
- Kharkov does have sound echo in fact

  1. I don’t like new sounds either, they could give a shell ejection and loading sound when in sniper mode but I’m fine with Hollywood gun fire as it is now.

Ps. that optimisation is bullshit…. i have worse fps than before, whatever they optimize, it take quite a toll on my rig.

    • Keep the sounds the way they are in test. Maybe some of us want some realism. I want to like wot more than wt…. But so far wt has been taking my free time instead of wot due to all the fakeness.

Or maybe have an option to use the new or old sounds.

      • Nah, I want hollywood sounds, WT is for realism fetishists and WoT is for gamey guys. Let’s keep it that way.

        • If you have played arcade in WT you’d understand a lot of WT players aren’t there for realism, rather for an atmosphere of realism in an arcade style game. Even though I play RB myself, there are a few things in RB that aren’t realistic at all either (GUI, 3rd person perspective, battle rating spread, flight models, maps), and although I do believe some of this needs to be patched, a few things I am ok having as I am not quite ready for simulator battles.

      • Still prefer WT over WOT, in WOT even with the updated sounds it still feels like playing with RC tanks as no transmission system and no sound from the turret movement. Also someone mention over here the sound for the 152mm gun is wrong.

    • I love the new realistic sounds; I hate Hollywood bullcrap.

If they decide to revert back to the old sounds they should AT THE VERY LEAST keep the new, low-tier MG/auto-cannon sounds.

      • Well I’ve played both WT gf and wot and find gnomefather’s sounds more atmospheric(even if they glitch from time to time or overload when a lot of huge guns are firing in close succession to one another somewhere close by)

The WT sounds, if more realistic, are also a bit bland and boring, not having an extra underlying growl or reverb that gomefather’s do.

Oh…another weird thing – the SU-122P(warthunder premium) which is basically the world of tanks SU-100 in top config(122mm gun) sounds exactly the samen when firing as gnomefather’s sound(same metallic clank, like hitting an anvil).

    • Who cares about sounds in game – who cares about some of the new graphics enhancements, what is important is playability! And the game moved from very playable to not so playable.

And I am not talking just about FPS or Lags, its about normalization, tank nerfing – the nerfs to the hellcat – have ruined it. Very sad!

To all you god damn whiners out there complaining about OP tanks. Please STFU and learn to play.

This is not COD – it a tank game – please stop trying to make it like COD.

FYI – COD used to be great now it sucks – see the tread.

  2. Is there any mention of a black screen bug when aiming towards the “empty void” of a map, when you’re standing close to edge?

I guess I gotta make some video of it, to better describe what bug I’m getting.

  3. crew “not forgetting previous tank training” (SS: as in, would stay trained for tank A even when retrained for tank B) option will not be implemented, it’s not economically profitable for WG

why not do it for half price at least?

    • this kind of data have to be stored, for ALL players, for various numbers of tanks etc. It is not worth to do something like this.

    • This would also massively increase seal clubbing. When there is no cost to moving your tier X crew with 5+ skills to a low tier tank.

      • Also, you would train one crew for ALL your tanks.

Imagine 80% of all tanks in a battle with crews that have 2-3 skills.
Plus older players having crews with 5-6 skills each.

        • Yyyyeah and if you get your arse handed to you and wanna play another tank…you’d what? Wait for the first tank to free up the crew so you can play your alternative tank?

And what would you do if you have more than one country? You gonna just have 6 dudes trained to jump in all tanks regardless of nationality?

The crew remembering all tanks before is a bit stupid and unrealistic.

What I would like them to implement already would be the role training(so you can train a damn radioman to any damn thing else…I’m tired of having 3 skill radiomen in the barracks with nowhere to stick’em)

          • Stupid and unrealistic for a tank commander to remember how to command a tank he was in long enough to grind another one? So if you buy a new and better car, you forget how to drive your current one? At least WG finally gave a real answer, “would not be profitable.”

  4. uʍop ǝpısdn ʇı ʇnoqɐ ʇuǝɯɯoɔ ǝʇıɹʍ oʇ ǝʌɐɥ ı ʇɐɥʇ ƃuıʇsǝɹǝʇuı os sı sıɥʇ

  5. Someone should tell Storm to play Company of Heroes 2 with the volume to the max. Then he can hear how cool sounds the tanks cannons sound etc. Hollywood awesome>realism. Same applied for the sound of Bad Company 2>BF3>ARMA games. Hollywood awesome>realism. End of story.

But why is Storm asking for sound? i thought Wargaming has a dedicated sound department. Who creates these sound for them? the janitor guy? lol!!

The new gun sounds are terrible. Almost no variety at all. I was watching a fight between a T110E4 and an Obj 140. Both their guns sounded the same. And so muffled. FAIL!

    • “But why is Storm asking for sound? i thought Wargaming has a dedicated sound department. Who creates these sound for them? the janitor guy? lol!!”

he is asking because of people’s opinion (if they like it or not), and people’s opinion isn’t something that dedicated sound department could emulate… or if you want storm not to ask, then deal with the fact that “awesome” Hollywood physics-defying sounds (which is funny, because lot of people say: “WE WANT MOAR REALIZM IN WOT FFS!!!”,a dn when they get it, they whine that is bad -_- ) as you want them might not be implemented…
(sorry, mate, but if you want something changed, and then you wonder why the hell are they asking for a feedback, something is slightly off…)

      • I meant someone who works on WoT sound should ask for opinions. Or Storm suddently has a job as sound designer too? there should be more direct involvement from the sound department, who actually knows their shit very well. (if WG even has one, judging by the shitty quality of guns, im starting to doubt they have one).

In normal game development companies i see the sound director talking to it’s community and asking for feedback. Not the guy who is balancing weapons or the guy who is a level designer etc.

        • Storm is probably the one in charge of customer relations. He asks everyone for their input then he gives that input to the respective departments to take care of.

          • Yup. Because the sound department has all the time in the world to read up a ton of feedback and figure the general opinion.

  6. better fps with max graphs (amd r290, now it’s worse with even mid-high) and the sound’s crap..

  7. New sounds are awesome, i really like it.

But the explosions are a joke. If they keep it i’m out. Well i am already out, but what i mean is i will not return.

At least there should be an option to turn those new Michael Bay effects off.

    • Look up some videos of what its like for the ammo rack of a tank to explode… You say its too much like they just put tnt in there and blew it up? That is exactly what it was like. Each shell has a massive charge on it and for that to be hit… you are literally going to get a TNT explosion. Hello, the force of the explosion is so great it can shoot a massive turret into the air (historically documented). the explosions before were to mild and didnt accurately reflect the chaotic violence of a true ammo rack explosion.

    • I didn’t download the test client, but found the sounds on youtube. The guns are now awesome, this is what i heard “in real”. Good job :)

    • Not only are the new explosion effects Bay-ish, they are also oddly pixelated and downright amateur. But yeah, they traded Hollywood gun sounds for Hollywood explosions essentially.

  8. “SS: as in, too much intensive sounds – Storm adds that atmosphere is good but he can’t play with it for long”

Same here. Thought i was the only one getting very tired after hearing those sounds.

  9. As far as FPS goes, its infinitely better than 9.0 atm. Although i actually still have freezes when turning the camera around rapidly…

As for sounds, i really like it. Im satisfied with almost everything, but what i really dont like is the lack of variety. I mean all the guns seem to sound pretty much the same. Even the old sounds had more variety…

Kharkov looks beautiful, but i really cant say much about its balance yet. We will have to see how balanced it is when it hits the live server….

Lastly, the bugs… Ive encountered the black screen bug, which is pretty annoying. Havent noticed anything else yet…

So far im quite satisfied with the patch. Lets hope they dont fuck it up…

  10. idk, sounds are okay-ish on 75mm, 90mm guns. But it sounds really weird on 120mm, 150mm, 170mm …
its just a quiet “poof”.. like a fart. Plus, all the high caliber guns have the same sound set ?
In a tier X battle every tank has the same sound. I miss my old E100 gun sound :(

    hellcat engine sound is AMAZING!

But I really dont like the new explosions… low quality, that animation has about 12fps, while the rest of the game runs at 50fps… looks terrible. Plus, it makes feel the 9.0 ammo rack explosion like nothing. and the resolution is really terrible, looks like if it was cut out of supermario

    • most of us dont give a shit about historical realism.
I was never using any mods, but the old sounds were better.
its a video game, meant to be entertaining.
new sounds, especially on high caliber guns sound boring, lack of variety, and its too quiet.
The woprst part is, every tank has the same sound… you cant hear difference between batchat and fv183

Anyway, whats so historical on a WTE100 gun sound when that vehicle didnt even exist ?

  11. According to the new sounds – everyone from the eastern Europe, who anytime heard BMP or T-72 shooting on some military actions, must agree that the E-100 gun sound from ASAP/KTTC 9.1 video is a typical sound of 125mm 2A46 T-72′s cannon.

    Which seems funny…

    • funny and sad at the same time for me :D :(
I’ve literally grinded all the way to E100 just because I loved the sound of 15cm :D

  12. And regarding the fact that Kharkov have a “reverb-zone” is true. In the area were there is a building bridge, reverb(echo) can be heard, regardless if the sound banks have applied a reverb effect within themselves.

  13. I like the new sounds so far . I don’t like the explosion when the tanks is destroyed , seems cartoonish . Also i would like a bit more smoke , withe blueish for the gasoline engines and darker black for the diesel ones .

  14. Has anyone noticed that there are new sounds for sniper mode, full zoom, when you move your tank, there is a cool metalic hiss whenever you move the hull ? That I liked.
Downside of the sounds is that only deathstar, jpeg100 and some arties do not sound _exactly_ like any other tank. If they “shopped” the sounds for each caliber it’s not audible.
Also not sound related, I did not see any change in camo for TDs after firing, died 200m from deathstar without it being visible.

  15. New sounds are awesome. Seriously have you tried it on a normal sound system? We already have gnomefather’s mod for awesomeness if you like that more, but noone made a historical sound mod with good quality sounds. And official sounds don’t clip or distort. Only problem I see is the lack of variety. And did you hear the Hellcat and Jackson? Now that’s something.

    • Of course not. Ive hooked up my Nokia 3310 to act as my PC speakers. Jeshhhh

The new engines are awesome, but the realistic gun sounds are crap.

      • I believe most players use crap speakers / headphones. My PC speakers are not half-bad, but it’s nothing compared to my normal home theater system. Sometimes I use it for games too (like BF3), and new sounds are better than BF3, if I only count a Hellcat/Jackson. Whether you like realistic gun sounds or prefer the Hollywood approach is more of a personal preference in my opinion. But you have GF’s mod, which is awesome if you want the extra. And really dat engine…

  16. I kinda liek the new sounds too, but the problem is that some guns have the same sounds as tier 5 tanks… Like the FV 215b 183: u dont have the feeling anymore that u are firing a big ass gun…

    • I’m pretty sure they said somewhere that they haven’t done the larger calibre guns yet, they are just testing for feedback on whether or not they are going in the right direction. i.e. if people like it they will do the rest of the guns, if not they aren’t going to waste more time on it.

  17. quote: “regarding historical sounds, Storm adds that War Thunder also has historical sounds of guns, yet everyone likes it there”

    huh!??! o.O

  18. I really like the gun sounds, they are MUCH MUCH better then the old ones.. those where super terrible… i dont understand why people would want those back..

maybe you all got bad speakers\headphones.. but the new sounds really sound nice and punchy.. like a real cannon.

look it up, T-72 live fire… you’ll see.

  19. Am i the only one who experience reset of the resolution each time i start the test client? -____-

  20. I dont give a fuck about sounds or bugs… The game finally runs smoothly! Went from 20-30fps with freezes to 40-50fps smoothness orgy. Now I want 9.1 to be released asap, hopefully WG wont fuck it up.

    • dont expect too much.
It was same with 9.0 … 1st test round was great then suddenly all fucked up when it went live

  21. i dont care if they change the sounds or not.As the Gnomefather continue make sounds i will use them. Also i dont care if they nerf tanks or not.I have all the tier 10 i want from that game and i play only in cw.
For now i enjoy the reality of WT than the fakeness of WOT

  22. The new sounds sound much better if you go to settings and turn everything but “vehicle” and “effects” down to to 50%, Then the gun sound etc. are much louder :)

  23. I’m gonna be honest, at first I missed the big boom of 150+ mm guns, but the small caliber guns sound thousand times better. Just try a Pz. I C and say that it’s not awesome. Maybe the huge effing caliber guns could use a bit tweaking, I don’t know… but I think they are fine as it is on the test.

I’m going to be really disappointed if they go back to “Hollywood” sound effects.

    • haven’t tried pz1c yet, stug, hellcat, t29 was okay.
E100, jpze100, fv183, and anything with huge ass gun sounds terrible…

  24. The new sounds are great in every way. I can’t believe some think that the old sounds are better. If they change the sound to something as bad as they were before because of some cry babies somebody better make a sound mod from the test.

  25. If they change the gun sounds and hellcat, jackson sounds i will get so pissed off… damn noob moaners who think that guns sound like in the Rambo movies.
Only thing i want them to change is to fix the turret sounds… when it starts making noise. You have to make a really big move to hear the turret noise

    • It’s called different opinions shit for brains. And where is different opinions, the majority usually wins. And the majority aka RU community dislikes them!

Take a chill pill moaner about moaners.

  26. they have 3 different gun sounds i think, but give them time to build up their gun sounds.. just tweak them and give the big 150mm+ guns a more boomy sound.. but if they keep it like this i really dont mind.. i’m just really happy they FINALLY changed those super super horrible gun sounds..

i hope they change all the engines soon.. the SU-152 engine sounds really nice!.

but as long as they dont change it all ill use the engine mod from Gnome.. but i do like the sounds of the guns.. so i will use the new ones.

  27. New engine sound, especially when driving in sniper mode: awesome! especially this fiiiiiiiiiimm from the rear speakers :)

Gun sounds: no please not, no no no! It is so silent, i sometimes even don’t hear if i have shot at all. This if for sure not realistic, your microphones must have been defect.

New bug implemented….: rightclick on crewmembers in the hangar doesnt show up the options like “sent to barracks” etc.

  28. Sounds are horrible, there are old games with much better stock sounds… and if you go to mods…

8:16, not only shoot sound better, it has the full set of sounds.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KV1pR2aSERM

I like the better optimization but in sounds area…. or they do a true profesional work or better dont touch them.

    • i think you really need to see a doctor if you think those sounds are better then the new ones in wot.

  29. - regarding historical sounds, Storm adds that War Thunder also has historical sounds of guns, yet everyone likes it there
it’s true, and this speaks volumes of the “quality of players” WOT caters to…

  30. i think the folks who are crying about soft sound and i cant hear, they are

    A : exaggerating or..
B: have a very bad sound car/ bad speakers/ bad laptop speakers?/ bad headphone..

the game plays fine.. the sound volume is also fine, just crank it up a bit and you will hear very good sound.. not like you kids are claiming it’s so super silent and bad.

  31. I’m getting about 10 – 15 fps increase, but the game microlags sometimes, at about 20 or 30 second intervals. It sometimes jumps around from 45 to 15 fps and so on.

  32. I really like new sounds. I hope they will rather go in this direction with sounds than the Hollywood BOOM.

  33. Anyone else experiences less fps on Komarin? Out of all maps on this one I barely get 30 fps.

  34. if i wanted realism i would play WT or Join the Army (was), so i want my tanks to be as sci-fi and fantastic as possible just like WoT does.

  35. Storm also adds that they found a way, how to without too much digging fix the lags when you switch from arcade to sniper mode. They are working on the fix right now.

So they finally found this thread? http://forum.worldoftanks.eu/index.php?/topic/259746-inne0811mod-na-lag-i-spadek-fps-podczas-przelaczania-sie-w-tryb-snajperski/page__fromsearch__1

    - regarding historical sounds, Storm adds that War Thunder also has historical sounds of guns, yet everyone likes it there
    ________________
True and reason people like it is because they don’t sound all the same with only differences in volume and echo they create. For example try out two prem TDs. SU-122P or something like that with 122 DT25 gun and check Jagdpanther with 88mm gun. You can clearly distinguish the sounds. They are both historical AND different from eachother. In WoT it looks like they have recorded one gun shooting and then just “photoshoped” for the rest of tanks.

    - the sound of turret turning is there for all tanks, in sniper mode
    ________________
Sound itself is good, but it lags sometimes as in you turn your turret for almost 180° and the sound only then starts.

    ________________
    Oh that explains the “lag”.

Also, Hellcat engine sound is AWESOME. In fact all sounds they have added to Hellcat and Jackson are awesome. They need to do this for other tanks too asap.

    • yea that polish sniper lag mod was so usefull…no more fps drop since i installed it

  36. - regarding historical sounds, Storm adds that War Thunder also has historical sounds of guns, yet everyone likes it there

That’s because there’s actually variety between the sounds… So an SU100 doesn’t sound exactly the same as a Panzer III…

  37. - apparently, Ruinberg on Fire will get some brighter lighting, Kharkov is brighter than Ruinberg on Fire

Yes, yes, all the yes. I HATE Ruinberg on Fire at the moment because it’s just too damn dark: I have to turn up gamma all the way to see anything without killing photoreceptor cells.

  38. I’ve just tried the beta and had a 20fps drop on speed on my Gigabyte P25W laptop. But I don’t know how to leave the feedback, can you provide a link to where that needs to be reported to.

  39. Soo i played on test server for a bit, and here is my opinion:
    - gun sounds – don’t like it, that “pom pom” sounds also in Tier X sounds funny
    - engine sounds – hellcat and jackson – very nice i like it
    - destroyed tank effect – it looks slushy, and ridiculous and it has delay about 0.5s, i think this could be better, with less boom effect

About optimalization, i didn’t notice any differences in FPS for me…still almost the same.

  40. “According to first feedback, the majority of players reports very positive influences”

I now avg 70+ fps on max settings compared to 9.0 50 avg on max so gj WG

  41. So in regards to bugs, specifically bugged armor models, the T95 Tank Destroyer’s gun mantlet when mounting the 120mm gun has a nice big 0mm armor triangle on it. This isn’t actually a 9.1 bug, it’s in 9.0 as well, however the current 9.1 test server fails to fix the armor model.

  42. Loss of FPS. Game freezes even more.

Would be soon stopping this lame game if they continue to degrade its performance on my PC.

  43. I for one love the new gun sounds, they have a very nice bass thud to them when you fire and sound just like a real tank’s gun would, wasn’t a fan of the hollywood style as it just didn’t sound right. The engine sounds are pretty nice but they need to find a way to record the engine at a higher volume as they are still too quiet, tanks are loud as hell :D

  44. love new sounds
    love new explosions

The engine sounds need to be improved
