New E-Sports Format

Hello everyone,

this might not come as a surprise for e-sports fans who follow this stuff, but the developers were in the past testing various e-sports formats as alternatives to the popular 7/42 (which works in team battles as well). The testing was mostly closed, but currently, Wargaming US decided to organize an event in new format, which is 6/48.

The fact that this format appears in the “open” does invite speculations, whether this will be the future of e-sports (in the past, it was discussed to actually use a 7/56 format). The WGL administrator wrote:

Over the next several weeks, a series of tournaments will be introduced to test different formats for the WGL. All players that participate are requested to provide feedback on the proposed format, to help judge the utility of this format for future WGL seasons.

Other formats will be tested as well in the future, as the quote says, so maybe we will see 7/56 still. The real question is, if the WGL format changes for all, will the team battles format change as well? Since team battles are considered to be an e-sports preparation, it’s completely possible…

  1. You are correct. I spoke WG at the blitz launch here in San Francisco last week. We were specifically talking about what is coming down the pipeline. About the format they are definitely trying to see which of the new ones get the most positive reactions from both the players and the spectators.

  2. As an eSport + exWGL player:
It would be much better if they just remove the T1s so the format should be 5/40.
battles would be exciting to watch, not as boring as now (looking at WGL Grand Finals).
Probably the 6/48 is a good step forward.

  3. 6/48 sounds like a horrible invitation to have more KV1S and Hellcat spam.

And without the extra points that you can have in a company battle, no specialty tanks like a KV-2 to provide some sort of diversity…

      • It’s not a problem to play with KV1S and Hellcats, though :) I saw few tubes with NaVis playing the current format with comets and kv1s, so it could be done. However, as Dimitri pointed, this means we will have a team setup from 6 vehicles all tier 8. That, in my opinion, will make it very enjoyable format with plenty of tactics and such…

      • It’s basically more of the same really.

It would be nice to force players to use different tiers though. From the spectators point of view watching same or very similar set ups every time is very boring, regardless of the quality of gameplay itself. By forcing odd tiers, by limiting certain tanks to only 1 per team or certain tiers to only “so many” per team, it would create a new world of configurations and whole lot of new fresh strategies.

  4. I’d like to see something like 8888844 or similar with two LT-only slots max tier 3 4 or 5 (not sure) . I like there being dedicated scouts in the format, bu tier 1 view range is just too low to be more than a tripwire.

    • Agreed, once you get to tier3 light tanks, there’s a lot of variety there.

  5. Well step in the right direction i think. But what they actually need to do is get rid of the standart battles and start to play assault as a default mode. Would be much more interesting to watch and we would get rid of the endless draws..

  6. All these mods are for scrubs that cannot use basic tactics and go for slugging each other.
The idea of mixed tier modes is to use more complex and innovative tactics. I’d like to see some esports modes capped on 7tier and even entry mode capped on 5tier – just to make some use to many interesting tanks, which are now totally useless (randoms is not “use”).
So, leave 7/42 as it is now and start experimenting on lower-tier modes instead of reinventing the wheel… The only thing you can do with 7/42 is to give administration directly to ESL and add some additional draw rules (currently 16points difference).

    • Tier 5 is boring as fuck since Chaffee is the top tank no matter what.
Tier 7 could be interesting, but then again mediums and lights play a very little role in tier 7 ( with huge HP discrepancies etc… )

Tier 8 is the place to be with the most variation except for tier 10

Tier 1 tanks are important in any competetive match and often decide the battle, but then again tier 8s are important and you could replace the T1s with T8s and would gain alot in terms of viewability.
