It Was Just a Little Bump, Sir!

Thanks to Chippaa and Cabo for this one!

Hello everyone,

while accidents of armored vehicles are usually not something to be laughing at (when a vehicle of dozens of tons is involved, the damage usually tends to be extensive), sometimes they are just plain silly. For example, take yesterday – Netherlands, near Valkenswaard.

Five Belgian MOWAG Piranha wheeled AFV’s were travelling to Oirschot firing excercises quite fast, when a tractor, belonging to a local farmer, drove on the road without warning from a small side road. The leading Piranha slammed the breaks not to smash it and the entire convoy of Piranhas bumped into each other, causing some minor damage, but damaging the fuel tanks of several vehicles – the fuel started leaking and had to be disposed of by local fire department. The Belgian army had to tow the Piranha’s away on trailers. Luckily, noone was hurt in the accident.

Oh well :) I am sure that being almost crushed by an armored vehicle will teach the farmer to look carefully when driving next time.

    • They’re heavy vehicles but they aren’t that horrific at breaking so I believe it was mainly distances between vehicles ^^

  1. I think it can also prove to be beneficial because the weakness (fuel tank rupturing on relatively small impact) was revealed not in real combat and therefore improvements can be made with no pressure.

  2. Fuel tanks fucked by “minor bump”…

Bet the Belgian squaddies feel safe when they go off to war now…

Hey Mustapha… we need a few RPGs for the Belgies..??
No Abdul… just hit the back end with a hammer….

  3. How safe are APC/IFVs? We’ve had two fatal accidents in our country within the past 2 months. One involving a SIBMAS 6×6 http://mytanksrock.blogspot.com/2014/07/2-killed-2-wounded-in-malaysian-ifv.html and the other a FNSS ACV-15 http://mytanksrock.blogspot.com/2014/08/another-malaysian-ifv-accident-2-killed.html.

Unfortunately, there was no attention paid to both accidents, no safety investigations as far as the public was concerned. Are they inherently unstable vehicles due to their high center of gravity? Or was it more likely human error? Both vehicles reportedly lost control at high speeds. How well protected are the crew?

Hope some one with some experience serving with such vehicles can shed some light.
