Storm is gathering feedback on 8.10 test FPS drops

Source: http://world-of-kwg.livejournal.com/261659.html

Hello everyone, Storm writes that players are reporting FPS drops in the new tests and asks for description of such events, screenshots and technical data of the computers, replays and dxdiag.

From the discussion:

- apparently, the new sound overhaul will take more time

Not much else, Storm is simply gathering feedback. So, please, let’s help a bit:

Do you have a FPS drop problem in 8.10 test? By that I mean – did your FPS drop a lot with the same settings? If no, please don’t post “I’m fine”, that’s good for you (high end computers are apparently fine), but WG needs feedback from players who DO have problems.

If yes, then state what settings are you running with (ideally with a setting screenshot from the test) and what is your computer configuration, along with anything you can think of is relevant (example: “I disabled everything and it’s still doing FPS drops”). I will then pass the data to Wargaming. Thank you.

  1. I have frame drops while zooming in (pressing Shift). And a general frame drop while spinning around the tank in external mode.
I run the game on maximum settings (unfortunately no screenshot since I cannot login to the test client at this moment).
    Also my configuration :
    Windows 7 x64
    Intel i7 3770,
    16GB DDR3,
    AMD Radeo 7970 3GB
    OCZ Vertex 3 SSD

      • Well I am not having HUGE fps drops, but drops non the less. I mean 8.9 works like a charm, but in 8.10 i had like FPS drops for a moment or two, but nothing extreme. Maybe I am complaining too much! :)

        • That’s pretty much my exact setup, except I’m using triple display, haven’t tried the test client yet, doesn’t bode well for me. I’ll try it tomorrow and post any differences using multiple displays on this thread.

  2. Oh yeah, big drop especially at the start of the match when there are too many tanks on the screen, more than 7.
Game settings is MAX for everything with only “Triple Buffering” off. FPS at 8.9 is 50 – 60 (min 40). With 8.10 average is 35 – 45 (min 14/15 at the start of game). Haven’t tried to change the graphics, as 35 – 45 average fps is still playable, but i would like better fps.
    PC specs: Core i5-4430 @ 3.00 GHz, 8 GBs RAM, GTX 285
I have noticed another bug, when you try to hide behind a tree that is down, you go into sniper mode, there are a lot of visual bugs (screen flickers, weird images appears…)
But overall I love the new visual effects.

  3. I had to resort(again) to putting the graphics render to standard, and not improved, because the improved graphics lowers my FPS to about 10fps. Fjords map has a huge problem for me, any trees/bushes, tank tracks, exhausts….

  4. About 10fps.. In 8.10

    Windows 7 64bit
    I7 920 2,67 ghz
    Radeon HD7870 2GB
    6gb ddr3 pc15000
    SSD disk

  5. Yeah i have been testing out the 8.10 out and i have not been able to actually try anything out, I Do know that my computer is not the fttest but currently on live server EU i have around 13-19 FPS

When i tryed the test server out i got at highest 9… :(
The computer im running on is an Old Laptop

    Asus x71SL
Processor is an : Intel Duo core 2.16 GHz
    Graphics card : NVIDIA® GeForce® 9300M GS with 512MB VRAM
    3 gb RAM
    OS: Windows XP SP3

Its not good but it works at the moment and i really hope that the lag wont follow onto the live server

  6. Huge drop at the start of the match when there are too many tanks on the screen.

    Shadows medium,
    texture res. max.
    mo.blur low
    everything else high.

“I have noticed another bug, when you try to hide behind a tree that is down, you go into sniper mode, there are a lot of visual bugs (screen flickers, weird images appears…)”
Exactly the same. No matter if I turn the sniper mode effects off or on.

average fps in 8.9 is 40-50
average fps in 8.10 is 25-30 (drops to 10-12 fps when more tanks on the screen.)
8.10 with the same settings as 8.9 runs about 5-10 fps lower.,

    i7 2630qm – runs at 1 core single thread :D :D GJ WG
    gtx770m
    16GB ram
    2x SSD raid0
    win7 ultimate x64
    nvidia 331.65 drivers
    no background processes, antivirus off.
    rest is irrelevant

  7. The same for me as well, external view fps drops, in maximum settings. In 8.9 I play 50-70 fps maximum settings; in 8.10 20-30 fps with maximum settings. Overall I noticed some fps drops, that makes the game a bit laggy.

    Windows 8.1 64bit
    i7-4700MQ CPU @ 2,40ghz 2,40GHz
    RAM 32, GB
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770M

  8. I have 20-30 fps in 8.10 and in 8.9 have 40-50. Settings are medium to high depends on particular settings. Resolution 1920×1080. CPU FX 4100, HD 7770 GHz edition and 4 gb of ram. OS Wimdows 8. And please ask which idiot decided to introduce blur while tank is in motion. I am not driving ferrari but tank that is not going more than 50 kph…

  9. I played 3 games last night on the WOT Common Test Server 1. I noticed that my FPS was decent(20-35fps) as I run on absolute minimum settings. However, whenever I would switch to sniper mode my FPS would drop to around 3-10 and get some serious lag. I have never had these issues on the live server. I run WoT Tweaker to help with my FPS as well. I am using a Dell Inspiron Laptop which forces me to play on the lowest graphic settings. I love this game and have spent thousands and just hope I am able to continue playing.

  10. I’ve been testing for a few hours and recommend that those who want to explore this problem install FRAPS (its free) and use the benchmark function as it records total frames, min, max, and average to a text file for a 60 sec recording.

The other cool thing to do, so you can compare 8.9 and 8.10 graphics side by side, is to drag a 8.9 replay from your replay folder and drop it on the 8.9 client executable file in WIndows, so it runs the replay in 8.9, THEN drop the same 8.9 replay file on the 8.10 client. With the same graphics setting (ie Max) in both clients you can then do a very accurate comparison of fps between patches and capture the data in FRAPS.

My results for the same 60 secs of a replay in Redshire were as follows:
    2013-12-06 09:23:21 – WorldOfTanks (8.9)
    Frames: 1994 – Time: 60000ms – Avg: 33.233 – Min: 28 – Max: 40

    2013-12-06 09:28:25 – WorldOfTanks (8.10)
    Frames: 1363 – Time: 60000ms – Avg: 22.717 – Min: 17 – Max: 30

    Huge drop – 31 % fewer fps..

    I run a AMD 1090T 6-core at 3.2GHz with a Nvidia GTX 650 and 8GB of RAM.

    • Here is an update, running the exact same 60 seconds of a 8.9 replay (Redshire) using the 8.10 client with Max settings, then turning off some of the graphics features individually and collectively:

      8.10 Max settings (Baseline)
      Frames: 1363 – Time: 60000ms – Avg: 22.717 – Min: 17 – Max: 30

      8.10 Max with DynCam Off
      Frames: 1367 (+0%) – Time: 60000ms – Avg: 22.783 – Min: 16 – Max: 30

8.10 Max with Extra Effects Off
      Frames: 1405 (+3%) – Time: 60000ms – Avg: 23.417 – Min: 16 – Max: 31

8.10 Max with Motion Blur Off
      Frames: 1489 (+9%) – Time: 60000ms – Avg: 24.817 – Min: 18 – Max: 33

      8.10 Max with Decals Off
      Frames: 1587 (+16%) – Time: 60000ms – Avg: 26.450 – Min: 20 – Max: 32

8.10 Max with DynCam Off, MoBlur Off, Decals Off
      Frames: 1787 (+31%) – Time: 60000ms – Avg: 29.783 – Min: 23 – Max: 36

8.10 Max with DynCam Off, MoBlur Off, Decals Off, Track Effects Off
      Frames: 1832 (+34%) – Time: 60000ms – Avg: 30.533 – Min: 23 – Max: 37

8.10 Max with DynCam Off, MoBlur Off, Decals Off, Extra Effects Off
      Frames: 1841 (+35%) – Time: 60000ms – Avg: 30.683 – Min: 24 – Max: 37

and finally, using the 8.9 client with Max settings:
      Frames: 1994 (+46%)- Time: 60000ms – Avg: 33.233 – Min: 28 – Max: 40

  11. I run the game at Maximum on the live server. In 8.10 TS I have massive FPS drops,I had to change all the settings to Medium and I still can go as low as 15 FPS on some maps. Also I noticed some very annoying graphic bugs, for example some times some tries won`t load correctly and I can only see some gray or black lines, also the track marks (the ones you left behind your tank) won`t load and instead I would see some strange textures.
    PC:
    AMD Phenom II X6 1090T,3.2 GHz,6 Cores.
    8Gb RAM,DDR3,133MHz
    MSI ATI Radeon HD 5850,1024MB,DDR5,256bit

  12. My PC: Windows 7 Home Premium, I7 processor, 8 gigs for RAM, Intel integrated graphics chip. On the 8.10 test, with most setting set to medium/low, I have decent FPS (around 15 FPS) while waiting for the countdown, but during the battle this randomly drops to 7-5 FPS. I have tweaked and tweaked the settings, but I can’t fix it, and I can’t nail down the cause either.

  13. OS: Windows 7 64 bit
    Resolution: 2560×1440 @ 60hz
    CPU: i5 3570k @ 4.5ghz
    RAM: 6gb DDR3 @ 1600mhz
    GPU: 2x GTX 580 SLI 1.5gb
Drivers: 331.93 (latest available as of this post)

I run the game completely maxed out (FXAA is OFF, Vsync is OFF, triple buffering is OFF, Fullscreen is ON) on 8.9 without issues, constantly 60fps+. In 8.10 the same settings I get drops to below 20fps very very often. In my opinion(though I’m not an expert) it appears to be related to particle effects density for smoke/fog. It also have noticed that the fps drops the most when any of the new tanks are around(japanese mainly, haven’t paid attention when it was just the new russians)

https://www.mediafire.com/?di3jcfcxy10n604 my DXDiag.txt is available here

I would of taken a screenshot of my game settings on 8.10 to post here but I just tried to login and it put me 30 000+ in queue, which would take well over an hour to get through so….yeah, so much for that.

    • Forgot to mention that SLI is working properly, as both GPUs are under 80-100% load during gameplay and during the FPS drops, so it doesn’t appear to be a SLI related issue in my case. When I run the game with SLI disabled, the performance is even worse, so…(speaking only about 8.10 test server)

      • I wonder if the smoke/fog/particles are rendered by CPU. I wouldnt be much surprised …
2x 580 SLI setup cannot have any problem and 80% usage is a proof of that. – cpu bottleneck.

        • surely a 3570k overclocked to 4.5ghz can’t be a limiting factor in a game as simple as world of tanks when it plays games like all three Crysis and Metro etc without issues(mostly gpu heavy games) and for cpu-limited games like starcraft 2 or diablo 3 it is well in to the hundreds.

I will, however, monitor my cpu usage next time I get on the test server(not happening in the next few hours, queue is over 30k atm) but if it is a bottleneck then it is no doubt a result of the game being on a poor engine and unable to take advantage of multi-core technology, even though it has been around for like 7 years now….

          • this is known fact. the game runs only on 1 core. – actually 1 thread. Its crappy engine. But it looks like that one core is now also rendering fog/dust while it should be rendered by GPU.

I’m not saying your CPU is bad, its great actually, I’m saying it is bottleneck. As it is for everybody. The engine basically uses only 1/8 of your CPU…

            • I was trying to point out that people with excellent GPUs are getting poor fps – and the GPU isnt 100% utilized. I think it’s obvious. That 1 cpu core is so overloaded that it cant send instructions for gpu. idk, to me it looks like the effects are rendered by cpu.

  14. 1st PC Specs:
    4 GB RAM
    i4 750
    ATI HD 5770

    8.9 : Max settings, 900p, 45-90 fps

    8.10 Max settings (Blur too) 20-30 :(
    Blur off: 25-40

    2nd PC:
    GTX 760
    i5 4570
    8GB RAM 1600 mhz

    8.9 Max 1080p 75+ fps

8.10 65-70 fps (great, but less… and WoT is not THAT good looking, BF3 and 4 run like this :P)

  15. I usually play on standard graphics, BUT on test server i usually switch to improved(to see new changes etc.) and actually on low settings there isn’t really a difference between standard and improved for me(i got pretty much the same fps on both) so i think that i can give my opinion on this matter. On former test servers i had nice fps on improved with low settings, but on 8.10 it dropped significantly. It was on a border of being playable. And this is not even with turned on blur and those colour presets(those killed the fps completely), but only low setting on a improved graphics. I then returned to standard and it was fine. This is just my opinion. Also as someone already mentioned in sniper mode there was some flickering and graphical bugs..

  16. I am work right now, so I can’t post the WoT settings I am using. However, I think the issue is caused by the dust ( or smoke? ) effect.

I get the most severe FPS drop ( below 20 FPS ) at the beginning of a match where there are many tanks running around me, and things gets better as tanks spread out.

I have already posted this issue in the NA forum in 8.1 bug section, and others also confirmed the issue.

  17. I have big FPS drops (from 40-45 to 15-20) when there’s a lot of smoke and dust going on around me. I also noticed that frame rate drops by 5 when I zoom out as far as possible (without the zoom out mod) in Himmelsdorf, compared to when I get the camera on top of the tank. Other than that, game runs with the same FPS as in 8.9 (using the same settings and disabling the new fancy stuff).

I also noticed a bug with the trees on Province: http://i.imgur.com/rdxh2Ht.jpg.

There is also a similar bug, with white colored planes showing up near the houses at the south base on Ruinberg (IMHO, I think it’s the fog that’s causing this).

    • More bug reports: same tree bug is happening on Serene Coast as well. Looks like speedtree is bug.

After disabling the track effects and smoke effects I was able to stabilize frame rate, more-less. (still drops when there are many tanks around me, not just in the view of the camera).

  18. Overall fps drop of 10 (from 8.9 to 8.10).Used to be 40-50 fps in 8.9, now it’s 30-40 fps while keeping the same settings(with motion blur off and other new stuff).
I get fps drops moving the camera, bigger fps drops when moving the camera when it’s at a bigger distance from the tank then when it is closer to it.Also the game has about 5-10 fps when there are more then 3 tanks around me.10-20 fps when there are 1 to 2 tanks near me.
Usual sniper mode fps drop of 10, doesn’t matter how much the initial fps is(if I’m in sniper mode near a lot of tanks the fps drops to 1-4/5 fps)
Also having fps drops when there are a lot of objects/houses near me(eg:city maps)
My WoT setting: Improved Medium to High settings with shadows, light, flora, vegetation and effects off.
    My rig:
AMD Athlon X4 3.0 GHz not overcloked
    4 GB of RAM
    Radeon HD 6570 1GB DDR3
Over 100 GB of free space on the HDD.

And I have to state that there are no fps drops while I’m in the count-down, although I move the camera and stuff and also there are graphical issue(like terrain color changes and other stuff). Will post some pictures on a reply.

8.10 Test server fps and ping: 20-40 fps and 190-250 ms ping.
Huge fps spikes when switching into sniper mode, experienced these during 8.9 but a lot more severe on the test server.
Also noticed a lot of lag spikes and fps spikes.

    Hope this helps :)

    • Oh and also note that I turned everything to minimum in WoT graphics settings as I value no lag game play a lot higher than graphics.

  24. Yes. A lot.

I Usually play on Medium, I played on Medium and I get at least 10 FPS Less, That’s 15 FPS

  25. With 8.9 WoT I get 40-50 and sometimes up to 60 (vsync on) with max setting except post processing OFF. In 8.10 with similar settings (all max and Post OFF), every map drops to a stuttered 20-30FPS, usually hanging around 20-25 however. There are also a massive number of what appear to be shadow glitches on all maps, they appear as dark splotches mostly.

    nvidia 570 gtx oc
    4gb DDR3 RAM SPEICHER
    Full HD Screen 1920* 1080

    I have on test server 30 – 50 fps
but too often in important game situations the fps is under 40 fps and its ” ruckeln” in german” i believe lags in german.
on live server i have 60 -100 fps.

  27. Played from NA. 8.10. Had major issues :

    * Shadow glitches when turned on or off. When off i even had a large flickering shadow mess that seemed to be camera dependent.

    * FPS that is usually around 35-40. Is now 10-15. PING at 250 didn’t help that experience for me either however.

    * Looking thru transparent objects made it drop more.
    * When lots of tanks are on screen at beginning of game the FPS drops more.
    * Motion blur is disorienting at first…not sure if its something I would use.

    Comp stats:
    27″ iMac 2010
    I7 Quadcore
    8gb ram
    ATI 4850 512 mb

  28. At the same settings(everything max except motion blur and effects/grass in sniper mode, which are off) and 1920×1080 resolution my fps dropped from 45 to 20-25. Even when I set settings to medium with the same stuff off as before I still had lower fps than on live server(around 30 fps). FPS dropped even more when much explosions or tanks driving were close by.

    i7 2600k
    GTX560
    8 GB ram

  29. I have a higher-end comp: 3.4 Gz, and Nvidia GeForce GTX 660
I usually run 70 fps on the live server, but its dropping to 15 on the test server; and it seems to happen when a cluster of tanks come near eachother

  30. Getting massive frame drops sometimes going sub 30fps at the start of the game. (normally run it at 60fps)
    Specs:
    i7 3770k
Two Gtx 680 asus 4gb in sli
    32gb ram
Running on max settings with resolution of 2560 x 1440 except AA off colour filter is off aswell.

  31. I have i5 2500K (3.3Ghz) + 8GB RAM + GTX 660 2GB. Win7 64bit.

On 8.9 I play with everything maxed out except for zero AA and usually I get 50-60 fps. Worst case scenarios are still well above 30fps.

On current 8.10 I went with maxed out settings again – including the motion blur and fxaa.
In the very first battle (T1 JP on Campania) my framerate got quite below 20fps and most of the time the game ran below 30fps.
I gradually lowered the motion blur quality all the way to none which put me into 30-60 fps range, 40-50 mostly.

But there are still those crazy framerte drops down to 20-25 fps and its pretty hard to pinpoint the cause since to me it seems like what might be the cause at one point won’t do much difference the next time. If I was to bet on something I’d go with rendering lots of dust and smoke particles from up close, but it doesn’t really feel like that is the whole issue.

Hopefully WG will solve this fast or leave the graphics enhancements for 9.0, since the framerate loss is nowhere near worth the results.

Oh and them trees. Oh my.

  32. Ok, my game runs fine in 0.8.9 with everything set to Maximum. However in the 0.8.10 test my FPS has dropped to almost a standstill. I’ve found disabling “Track Traces” seems to help in giving me a major FPS boost. Can anybody else confirm this works for them?

    • +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
YES THIS TOTALLY FIXES THE PROBLEM JUST DISABLE TRACK TRACES
      +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

  33. Having huge fps drops in 8.10 with various settings and depends on maps as well. Max is what I play on in 8.9 i average 75FPS there in 8.10 i get 45 if am lucky sometimes as low as 10-15. My system specs are:

    Windows 8.1
Intel ivy bridge 3570K 4.5 GHZ
    AMD 7950 4GB GDDR5 @ 950mhz and speed boost 1200
    8GB DDR3 @ 1600
I play at 1920x 1080 and MAX settings on everything

Have all the latest drivers installed I am in IT and its not a driver issue its Engine optimization.

  34. Sharp fps drop (about 50%!)
    System: Intel Core i7 @ 3.6 Ghz, 6 GB triple channel DDR3 @ 1800 MHz, Geforce GTX 670, 2560×1600, OS: Windows 7 Ultimate

  35. Fps drops on maximum settings for 8.10, 8.9 is smooth sailing.
    Windows 8.1
    AMD A10 5800k
    AMD HD Radeon 7850 2GB DDR5
    8 GB DDR3 1600 RAM
    Some random 500 gb hdd

Seems even lower fps when launched with steam.

  36. C2D E7400 @3,5GHz
    4GB RAM
    GTX 285
    Win 7 x64
    1600×1200
Everything maxed, no AA, no tripple buffering (seems to cause stuttering), no v-sync

For me, drops occur when I have track effects turned on, but not on every map. On Abbey, and Malinovka i had drops, There were no drops on El Halluf and Live Oaks for example.
Motion Blur has very big impact on performance, sometimes up to 10 fps.
And a lot of bugs related to flora – while shooting through bushes in sniper mode I have heavy screen flickering, small bushes, trees that are falling off causes artifacts.
Apart that, game is working better, more smooth I would say, but fps is a bit lower than in 8.9, someting about 30-40 vs 40-50 in 8.9

  37. Experiencing a drop to 10 FPS when FPS rarely drops to below 30.

  38. 8.9 I had 60-70 FPS, running max settings at 1080p, and the test server has nearly halved it to 30-40 FPS; and while I usually have steam, team speak and the like running, i turned all of them off for little help (4-5 fps tops). Also was playing where me and 3 other tanks were holding off like half the enemy team and in sniper mode it was watching a slide show (no joke 6 freaking fps!)
    My rig (laptop btw)

Intel i7 Quad core running at 3.7 GHz
    Nvidia 765 graphics**
    16gb DDR3 ram
    2x 750gb 7200rpm HDD’s
    And just regular windows 7

**Dunno specific drivers and what not but i updated them about a week ago so I’m pretty sure its all up to date!

And I suppose I auta mention it, the motion blur kinda made me sick so that I removed everything else was maxed out…

  39. I actually seem to get a massive drop because of decal quality, for no apparent reason at all. Currently, in 8.9, I have it at and everything else at the highest setting, yet in the 8.10 test, if I turn off decal quality completely and leave everything else maxed, it runs just fine. What does decal quality even do? I don’t notice any difference.

  40. I got a huge drop in FPS. It’s so bad that i can barely play the game, I’ve tried to reduce my settings as low as medium graphics and turn motion blur off and still i was only getting 40 FPS and dropping frames like crazy. Pre-Update, I got 70 FPS steady on maximum settings.
    specs:
    Nvidia GTX 660 graphics card
intel 3rd gen i7 8-core processor running at 3.40 ghz
    16 gb ram
2tb barracuda hdd with >1tb freespace
    windows 8.1
all drivers are up to date and directX is up to date aswell.

  41. I have fps drop since 8.6 I think. Recently I’ve OC-ed my 3570k to 4.2GHz to reduce fps drop because the game use only a single core.
The drops manifests besides of fps drom with GPU load dop. SInce I OC the cpu the average fps rised & drops almost dissapeared.
VIdeo card GTX 660 @1137MHz turbo boost, 8GB system RAM.
In the screenshot the cpu was runing OC-ed.

I wait the 9.0 update with the new graphic engine.

    Processor: Intel core i5 2410M

On live server with those settings I average at about 30 fps. Now with the same settings on test server my average is somewhere about 20 – 22 fps but it very often drops way bellow 20. If I set everything as low as I can then the normal average is a higher but I have massive framedrops to 8 – 10 fps, and they happen very often.

  43. get some lags while switching from normal to sniper. also laggy when vegetation is rendered (grass). got a surprising lag-spike in Fjords with ~10fps after loading in. no change after client restart. changed settings to normal (normally running the game in max except shadows, light on medium) and it stabilized.

    CPU AMD FX6300@4,01 GHz
    12GB DDR3 RAM@1333MHz
GPU Gigagbyte R9 280X no OC

testclient is stored at a HDD

  44. When will WG finally upgrade their dated engine to ‘modern standards’? i.e multicore support and DX11. It’s unacceptable to have such FPS with graphical settings maxed out when other engines offer way better performance. BF4 for instance runs above 45FPS on my system but WOT averages at 30 and drops all the way down to 10-15 fps.

  45. OK it`s clear that there are problems with their graphics engine on test server. No need to post my pc specs since everyone is getting those drops no matter of system configuration.

  46. My machine:
    * CPU: Core i5-3570 @ 3.4ghz
    * RAM: 2x8gb DDR3
    * GPU: 2gb GeForce 660Ti
    * OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64

    WoT Config:
    * 1920×1080
    * Maximum detail
    * FXAA Off

    Results:

I noticed some FPS drop in 8.10 CT. Not a huge amount, but whereas one 8.9 I run at 50-70 fps average I found 8.10 tends to run between 30-50fps average.

As a side note, WoWP running at 1920×1080 with maximum details gets 70 to 120 fps.
