Clone Wars

Hello everyone,

I am sure you can imagine that Wargaming success with World of Tanks drew a lot of “flies to the cowpie”, so to say. Here and there, games “inspired by” World of Tanks (or even outright clones) appeared. The biggest of them is… what, War Thunder? Nope. It’s Ground War: Tanks. If you are now starting to think “oh, I gotta check it out”, don’t bother. It’s a browser-based game and it looks ugly as all hell. It was created by Mail.Ru, one of the premiere Russian software companies with huge revenue. Anyway, the point of this article is something else – check this out, this is a “poster” of their recent promotion:

Two interesting things there. First is the E-90, which is an ancient fake, coming from one alternate history design. I wish people stopped spreading this shit – it pops every now and then. There was never a “Henschel” (Tiger II-looking) turret for the E-100 hull, it’s a fake. But whatever, I guess these Russians don’t bother with historicity.

They don’t bother apparently with copyright either – VK7201. Yep, that’s a Wargaming invention. Yesterday, Yuri Pasholok posted an amused thread on LJ community, pointing that out. It’s not the first time Mail.Ru used WG stuff either, last time, it was the Jagdpanzer E-100 model (that was apparently settled out of court by Mail.Ru removing the model). Looks like another job for SerB’s black helicopters lawyers then…

  1. It looks like WoT in Alpha/Beta. Not bad but still it’s not gonna last for long.

      • rofl.. they haven’t even been arsed to do anything to it…

…at the least I would have removed the buildings, and put some filtering on to….

I’m surprised they actually managed to get a “shot” from Port without the WG logo on them billboards…

        dumb fecks…

  2. E-90 is bullshit that we know all but snatching Pasholok’s invention is over the line, The SerbNaz must intervene again this time.

  3. Almost the same bullpoo as “Project Tank” was.
Also, why is the front of the Tiger P bended?

    • Idk, fisheye. The vkP model also seems fucked up. They can’t even copy things right.

    • It is not “almost”

It looks exactly the same, and has the same head’s-up display, fonts, and graphics.

Project Tank was presumably a localized Ground War: Tanks.

  4. Wow… that tiger p is just a failed hull design with a wot tiger h turret pasted on it…
And the vk7201is stolen as shit!
    This… is just… sad!

  5. yes, GWT is a clone, but not a bad one..it has three very interesting game mods (respawn, PvBots and Generals), which would be a revolution in WoT..

  6. I think some competition is fine.
It could/could make WG a bit sharper on releases and features and also cheaper to pley.

You write about historicity, but immediately thereafter you mention the VK7201….

    • Are those sprites ripped out of Empires and Allies?

Well, at least they’re using ones from a defunct game as opposed to an active one.

  7. Fun fact. This “poster” is composed of whole models ripped from WoT. Check the rust stain patterns. Also, whoever did that, missed the fact that wot uses an inverted x axis to most modeling software, and so models imported from the game end up with their sides switched (left becomes right).

  8. This is not Russian game. This is a Chinese game. Mail ru shows just a Distributor.

  9. Ok, so all rip off aside, is it playable? Does it CTD when you play over Tier 4? Does it properly support multi-core CPUs? DOes the tank hanger areas send your graphics card into meltdown mode? Might be worth playing if it simply plays better than WoT ;-)

(note to the humor impaired, the above post was meant in jest.)

And most importantly of all, is there an english client version?

    • There WAS an English Client version – Project Tank, if you remember it. It was basically just Pre-release World of Tanks as far as content goes.

  10. I wish they’d stop inventing tanks to put into WOT. I have nothing against paper tanks and historic proposals for various modifications on tanks to appear in the game, but why make something unhistoric when they always tout their historically accurate horn.
Anyway, even more competiton is not bad, even if it;s not at the same level. It’s surprising how big the market for tank related game is…:P

  11. how many tanks in world of tanks are absolute fakes? thus making your historically accurate argument invalid. just saying, world of tanks is so far from being historically accurate that it frightens me that they are allowed to claim to be.

  12. The VK 72.01 was a real design, you know. True it may have had different specifications than the one in the game, but it existed.

  13. Two things:

    1. So many fail clones of WOT lol.

and 2. I wish the E-90 was not a fake tank. It’s such a damn cool design, but alas, no such thing as the E-90 ever existed. One of the many things i do love about Alternate History.
