Photos from Normandy

Hello everyone,

Czech player jrt5 was in Normandy last week. He took a trip through the countryside to the beaches and ended up in the “movie camp” at Sainte-Mère-Église. And there, he took a picture of the M4A2 “Fury” Sherman from the upcoming movie. He was kind enough to provide those (and other) photos for publication, thank you!

    • What are early tracks doing on the front? Not like they could replace them.

    • Didn’t you read the text? That’s the M4E2 “Fury” Sherman, which is going to be used for the upcoming movie: Fury. My guess is that they are recording parts of it on the Normandy beaches, and then they decided to show it off at the event :)

      • Except it’s wrong. It’s an M4A3E8, featuring the T23 turret, long 76mm (as opposed to the usual stubby 75mm), and HVSS suspension instead of VVSS (as seen on the other Sherman later in the post).

      • It’s a spigot mortar and it’s useless against tanks (under 100m firing range and almost no armor penetration)

          • The 290mm mortar was used to level fortifications, had to be loaded externaly by the co-driver (the turret had to be traversed over his hatch), and fired 40 lb warhead, with 28 pounds of high explosives.
It was the post war AVRE that mounted 165mm demolition gun that fired (IIRC 30kg) HESH round

  1. For the anecdote: the Centaur is the same that appeared on WoT news page when “Tank of the month” featured the Cromwell. It has been moved since for restauration, it was supposed to be put back in place on June 6th ; though I did not pass close by since.

Plus, the trackless Priest and the M3 are actually at the Ouistreham Museum, not in Villerville.
Also, the AVRE Churchill is precisely in Lion sur Mer.

    Otherwise, nice photos!

While I’m at it, some others I took myself (poor quality, but it’s from my phone, sorry in advance) at Bayeux Memorial Museum:

      • No problem, man. But since I live there (and pass by these tanks quite often while doing bicycle rides), I thought I would correct the little mistake. I hope you enjoyed your vacations among us!

        • Yes I did! We visited all the important places. The celebrations were great and there were so many fans in historical uniforms on tanks, trucks and jeeps. I even saw a Spitfire flying in formation with Eurofighter. And Lancaster with Spitfire and there were four Hercules flying low along the coast.

  2. That armored car is the M8 Greyhound and that AA halftrack is the M16 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage
