Hello everyone,

it is often said that World of Tanks is a game, not a simulator, but apparently, this is not the entire truth, since World of Tanks tactics seem to work in real life as well :) The following was recently posted in the “Military Portal of Ukraine” VK group.

“Just talked to the recon of the 51st Brigade. They told me one interesting story. One of their soldiers was wounded at Marinka. They are there for quite a while already and they have even stopped calling it “hell” and “horror”, since everyone got already used being shelled. They are shooting almost every hour. Both from Russian side and from our side. Russian green troops are excercising on our soldiers. In the beginning, they simply shelled from distance, now they are so cheeky as to come in tanks and open fire. We do not fire back as long as they don’t cross into our territory. Only our troops are beginning to respond – they give them hell.

Tanks from Donetsk also come regularily. They made themselves a ton of hideouts and when our planes come, they simply make the tanks disappear in the shrubbery.

And now the story. Our boys from 51st decided to find out, where the tanks of the separatists are disappearing to and started hunting for them. They got noticed by the separatists and one of their tanks turned around and went at out boys. It started shooting at them with its gun and machinegun. Our guys went to the ground and thought “we’re screwed, the tank will get us”. But suddenly, an Ukrainian BTR rushes in. It starts to circle around the tank, hammering its turret with its main gun. The tank starts to turn around, trying to aim its turret at the BTR but it does not have enough speed and maneuverability. Then the tank tries to run away, but the BTR continues to shoot its turret at close distance until there is an explosion, which tears the turret off. The guys in the BTR turned out to be from the 72nd Brigade. Such aces we have now!”

….and they say rushing does not work :) I am not sure what kind of BTR it could have been and the report does not mention that, but Ukraine has several heavily armed BTR models such as this. Naturally the comments under the post are (apart from cheering) full of “lol WoT” :) SerB teaching stronk tektiks!

      Ukrainian BTR-4 is garbage, Iraq sent it back because it’s armor cracked open during shipping.
      The story itself makes no sense, nobody use tank without infantry support, especially the DNR militia which is led by a retired GRU Spetnaz officer (Igor Strelkov).
      +T-64 can turn much faster than the BTR can circle it…

        Look for “I was a separatist fighter in Ukraine” interview with Artur Gasparyan from Armenia and read carefully about their proficiency.

          I love them.
          My favorite is the one, where our local newspaper (I live in Hungary next to the Ukrainian border) called an he unnamed separatist leader and they “tricked him” to say that he was there when they shot down the 777. That was glorious.

          • What else can happen when Russians are shelling from across border (and you cannot shot back) from side and bandits are shooting from other side…

      • Is not the T-64 the MBT – Main Battle Tank and have some special armor to be able to withstand hits much better? I mean… these things are meant and build to punch thru Germany towards France and they are build to withstand being shoot at.
        That itself put this quite nice dramatic story to question, not mentioned other dangerous suggestions within the story itself. Aka “we are good guys”, trust us.

        • It’s also worth checking out videos with T-64 turning it’s turret and imagining a BTR keeping up with that.

    • Ukrainians barely have fuel to supply their tanks. ATGM’s costs. You know it’s interesting how USA and EU let them ukrainians rot and die. I expected more support from them.

      They are providing aid and weapons to al-qaeda terrorists in Syria. But i havent heard anything about helping Ukraine get rid of those rebel maggots.

  10. This is an issue where crew training and experience comes into play, I’ve said a few times to different people that giving poorly trained and experienced people advanced materiel is going to have poor results.

    The crews of those 3 vehicles could have been brothers and sisters, or parents and children.
    Defiantly perhaps people with radically different opinions.

    There are more resemblances to real world in wot.

    I have seen a youtube move from Syria, where the military was, using tanks to support infantry, and fighting some rebels.
    The commander was coordinating tanks placement on the street and it really sounded like clan wars or company orders, with calling specific tanks and giving precise orders, even to the point of telling them to move few meters this or that direction.

    • Actally, it’s the other way around I guess.

      People that serve the army are trained for this stuff, they practice it every now and then – it’s amateurs, like most non-military people who play pixel tanks in cw/companies, run around with asg/paintball, play rts/turn-based strategy games or even cod/battlefield that try to re-invent already estabilished real life tactics/strategies and implement them (the degree of such implementation may vary because of software/controller or other limitations).

      That’s just my guess though, I would love to read some army veterans/active duty soldiers opinion on this.

  13. Wait, am I the only one to see this for what is it? A BTR circles a tank while shooting it? The tank can not keep up so out of all that possible things, the tank chooses the most convenient one for a good story and turns it rear to the APC in order to run and gets ammo racked and exploded for a more then a convenient end to the said story?

    This is a morale boosting story made up by someone who plays WOT and watches a lot of Hollywood.

    I thought ppl on this blog had more brains.

    • EDIT: Next week read how evil russian SPGs were detected by brave Scouts, who then proceeded to cliff-dive the SPGs before repairing their tracks and retreating back to the Ukrainian lines.

No normal person will not go on the t-64 on the APC+speed of rotation of the turret of the tank is very large and one shot of mine, even near the BTR-will destroy it!     So I won’t be quick to judge that this actually happend. A tank crew would do anything to prevent encirclement and then it is just a matter of time, before the gun is pointing to the BVP way…

  20. I could see an BTR90 type taking out a light tank or T-34 but if it was a T-55 or some other Russian cast off I find it hard to think it would pen. Those 30mm guns I think have approximately 100mm with normal ammo and maybe 130mm ish with du which is unlikely.

  23. I think we should focus on WoT and not in politics, but since some of you started, i’ll have to join them. Sorry for the others.

    I don’t think ukranians or separatists are bad. Ukranians want to have a united country and separatists want the independence from it (maybe later join Russia, but again, if that is what they want…). In Ukraine they want a single country, with a single language, etc… Which, in my opinion, is not fair.

    I’ll put my country, Spain, as an example to talk about this subject. In 1640, Portugal and Catalunya fought for their independence of Spain; one won (Portugal) and the other one lost (Catalunya, which stayed in Spain until today). Where they “bad”? I don’t think so, they just wanted to independize. Different ideas made a war, but none was “the bad one”.

    In 1930s, the Bask Country (Euskadi) and Catalunya wanted their independence from Spain because they wanted to preserve their different languages and cultures and not be Spanish (Spain is like a union of a lot of different little countries, there is a lot of cultural variety and even 3 living and healthy languages apart from the spanish, which are the catalan, the bask and the gallego). Fascists, with general Franco ahead, wanted a unique country, with a unique language and a unique culture. After Franco won the civil war (not related to independence of these two), basks and catalans suffered a lot for their indepence dreams.

    What I see in Ukraine today seems like what we have in Spain: Fascists want to oppress some people and force them to live like they want and erase their culture. I know separatists are Russia’s friends and that may piss off some of you, but in the end, it’s their choice. If they don’t want to be ukranian and prefer to be russian, what is the problem? They culture and language is russian after all, not ukranian. And if they don’t want to be any of them and just want independence, there is nothing wrong with that neither, in my opinion.

    I’m not saying ukranians are fascists (nazies seem to be very pleased about the idea of fucking the separatists, which makes me want to put an ideological distance with the idea), ukranians wanted to be free and become part of Europe. That’s great! They made a revolution against their president to be free. But now, it’s time to let those who doesn’t have the same dream found their own country, if that is what they want, because they have to be as free as the ukranians are today.

    PD: calling separatists “terrorists who destroyed a plane with 300 civilians inside” is not fair. Why would they want to kill them? It’s evident it was a mistake, a big mistake, and some one has to pay for it. But it’s not like if they loved to shoot planes… Nobody wants that. I don’t know what happened, but I’m sure they didn’t want to make that.

    • The problem is about “wanting”. In Crimea you only needed Russian passport to go vote for “independence” and you could use it several times in different polls.
      Ask yourself, how much of civilian population living there really WANTS “independence” and then incorporation into Mother Russia.

      • I believe it is actually quite high percentage of people in that region willing to join the Russia. It is not the issue though. The issue is the national integrity. It is on of the principles of modern countries.

        Take Great Britain for example. It is very multi national. Imagine that suddenly all double/multi national citizens would declare to join bits of the country with their second homelands. There would be a mess. And of course no one would allow them to do it in the first place, no matter how much a certain part of the population really WANTS it.

    • Except, one might ask how much Russian influence is involved. It is one thing for people to want their independance, it is quite another for a neighbouring country to create unrest and support arms. I strongly doubt this is anything but good, old fashioned robber tactics from the Russians. There may be a few actual Ukrainians who do indeed want their independance or to join Russia, but I bet most of them just want to live their lives in peace, preferably in the Ukraine rather than Russia.

    • Are you really trying to compare the Catalunya problem with this one?

      Let’s say a few things first. The 1640 is the war of succesion, not seccesion as all independentist seems to think. Catalonia (well, not really, as Catalonia in that time means nothing, you were part of Aragon) support the Austria and Castilla support the Borbon. And in fact the war was a draw and the Borbon became king because a de facto treaty to make spain weaker as a whole (Aragon included). In the 30′s the revolution for independende set it up in Asturias, Catalonia dont last more than a few days of ”revolution” glorious as it was. Asturias in the other side, have to be putted down by the spanish army, in fact the still loyal in those days Franco, was the general involved in the ”pacification” of the insurrection.

      After the civil war in Spain (where Asturias were again the centre of the north loyal resistance versus the now facist Franco, nor the ”basque freedom fighter” resist so much), Franco gave a lot of resources to Catalonia to keep them happy, and Catalonia keep calm …for a time, until they grown in expenses of the rest of the country, now they think they have the right to be independent (while no where in history was Catalonia independent, the more they was is a vassal state of Aragon, i should remind you) because they are brainwashed by ”honorable” politicians who want to rule their own country (you know, the honorable -seny?- Puyol, the 5% Mas, the not radical Oriol…), those that goes ahead with that idea trying to avoid a well deserve prision in the matters of robbery, pillage and corruption…and as hard as it seems to know ALMOST 50% of catalonians support the idea (while the other 50% remain silent, maybe when the independence left the dream state they became more aggresive and start being as loud as those boring separatist).

      So please, don’t compare a made up Catalonia (Catalunya) history, with the Ukranian problem. Is ridiculous at best, and a lack of respect for the people dying. Please tell me when catalonia suffer a loss of some of their ”freedom” fighters to the spanish ”oppresion”. Because as i already told you, Asturias have more rights to be independent based in your arguments, at least they have to be putted down by force, not surrendering as soon as they are call. Als for your information (as biased as you seem you are) real basque country is Navarra, Pais Vasco (basque country) was the vassal state of the formers, but i dont see Navarra wanting seccesion neither. Oppresion in Catalonia by evil Spain is as bas joke as calling free media to chinese ones.

If – given the desperate financial situation and rejection of many soldiers to fight fellow citizens for their choice AND the pressure from IMF that give all the money, only if the Ukraine was stay intact, so they can start fracking the natural gas by poisoning the land on the land, where the antinazi forces declared independence (!) – they have a chance to put the blame on the antinazi forces (and the media presstitutes are quick to sieze that chance), they do it on purpose.

        So they are already known to be killing the civilians. If the Ukrainians does not seems to count, then they take the international citizens. I believe that was done on purpose also, because the report that the neonazi operated radar for Buk AA system was active near Doneck was confirmed.
        So the first question anyone have to ask – becaue the antinazi fighters don’t have planes, why the naonazis deployed scuh system in the frontline…?

When Catalonia have more rights and autonomy that any province of France (just as an example) could dream about.     • While I respect your attempt at rationalising things, every goddam European country was, at some point, multicultural.

      France, at the crossroad of Spain, Italy and Germany, invaded by ten different people throughout history, from the Romans to the Wisigoths or the Franks, is nowadays regarded as a culturally unified country (except for its growing muslim-douchebags population). Yet, a century ago, a french coming from Rennes could hardly speak with a French from Marseille, or from Perpignan, or Lille.

      It’s not a question of fascist oppressing a minority. It’s a question of people being smart or selfish. In the 19th century, french people were overall smart enough to realize that being part of an unified France gave more opportunities to their children.

      On the other hand, Catalans, knowing that they come from the richest spanish province, decided they don’t want to share their wealth anymore, and want more independence. Even though, by becoming independant, they would be a shitty country stuck between France and Spain, with no prospect whatsoever.

      Mind you, it’s not as bad as the Flamands in Belgium. They used to be the poorest population, and largely benefitted from the welfare state and industry put up by Wallons. Now that industrial Wallonie is sinking, Flamands keep bitching about how they shouldn’t have to help their neighbour, going as far as rewriting history with extra added nationalistic mumbo jumbo (“Wallons sent Flemish to their death during the Great War, my mum told me!”).

      What pains me is that the same shit happens in every country, on a different scale. Bretons in France, despite sucking more money than they create every year, convinced themselves that, somehow, they are feeding the rest of the country.     Yeah, rebel tank (of which they have only few) was chasing few Ukrainians on foot (they were close enough to approach rebel entrenched position.. sure), and suddenly *out of nowhere* Ukrainian BMP comes along and “heroically” attacks rebel tank. Rebel tank of course has no infantry or any other support although it’s one of few tanks rebels have. It makes sense.

      They didn’t mistake it for a fighter jet, they mistook it for yet another Ukranian military transport.

      I don’t care for either side of this conflict. Western backed Ukrainians want to establish yet more influence in eastern europe while the Russians want to keep a hold on what influence they have left in the region by any means nessecary.

The 30mm cannon module on the BTR 4 is mounted higher than the height of the tank so it could have shot down onto the weak top armour / hatches on the turret and penetrated. The penetration of the 30mm auto cannon with sabot ammo is 55mm BTW. It would have been like something out of an Expendables movie though.
