Tanks in Prague

Hello everyone,

a tank, full of Russian soldiers, destroyed a bus in Prague yesterday, running it over. No, don’t worry, not in real life – despite Putin’s wishes and boasts, the Russian army isn’t capable of doing that anymore. A new Czech movie, called “Krycí jméno Holec” (“Codename Holec”) was being shot in Prague, near the Czech Radio.

The movie is of Austrian-Czech co-production and is based on a short story, called “Italská spojka” (“Italian connection”), a fictional story from 1968, using however real characters and places. In order to shoot the movie, the entirety of the street was “converted” into its 1968 look.

The movie is a story of Austrian journalist Helmut Zilk, who made some of the most dramatic movie shots in 1968, showing the world the brutality of Soviet invaders. It’s a spy thriller and drama, should be interesting (well, at least for us Czechs). It is scheduled to come out in early 2016.

  5. I like it when in films they use actual vehicles instead of cheaply made replicas with extra (or missing) road wheels etc. Bit of a waste of an oldtimer bus though, hope there are at least a few left of those in museums. :)

    I’ve always liked FTR, but my suspicion about SS being a hypocritical moron seems true.

    If you had researched just one minute outside of BBC and mainstream media, you’d realize the world is not a “movie” where there is one bad guy.
    The only crime Putin is guilty of, is trying to find a political solution to the Ukraine problem, rather then start a war – like the U.S. wants.

    • Josh Zemlinsky , so you say that Russia has NOTHING TO DO with conflicts in South Ossetia, Transnistria, Nagorno-Karabakh, Abkhazia now in Eastern Ukraine ? :D

    • The only crime Putin is guilty of, is trying to find a political solution to the Ukraine problem, rather then start a war – like the U.S. wants.

      Ok, let’s look at it this way – there are 3 choices possible regarding the (civil) war in a directly neighbouring country:
      1) Russia turns a blind eye to anybody crossing the border with military supplies.
      2) Russia is directly supplying the separatists.
      3) Russia is incapable of securing its own border and thus anybody can cross with anything.

      I don’t see how either option is helping to find a political/peaceful solution where people stop dying.

      Unless you somehow believe that those “regular citizens defending their homes” have enough war material & supplies to run a war for more than half a year. But maybe people in the east keep tanks/APCs/MLRSes/guns & ammo in their sheds for times like these, who am I to judge ;)

    • Yeah, SS used to look sane enough before starting to show his “rich” political knowledge.

      The funny thing is that he considers public expression of hatred towards the Poles to be nazism but doesn’t hesitate to make hate posts against Russia and Russians at least every week. Should I remind that simple swapping of an object of hatred does not change the fact that making unjustified and false statements about a nation or a country over and over again is nazism.

      Western media, western NPO, western politicians, western military and western so called human rights organisations won’t be the World’s Gendarme any longer.

      First, the USA must answer for destabilising Syria and Iraq area and financing/backing/training of islamists in entire world though Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait proxies.

    • I remember Putin personally claiming that upon his wishes Russian tanks can be in half dozen of European capitals in a few hours time. But you seem to ignore any threat or lie Putin and his Molotov are spewing out. Which kinda invalidates everything pro-putinists like yourself write or say.

        And like guy above said, SS disapproves national bashing of Poles, but not that he approves, but enjoys nazi bashing of Russia.

        While claiming to be objective, stay objective and non-biased.

          • And can Czechs will remember about 1945. And about 140000 Soviet soldiers who fell at liberation of Czechoslovakia?
            Maybe forgot that input to Czechoslovakia of troops of the countries of the Warsaw pact happened in the heat of the American aggression against Vietnam?
            Americans of 10 years bombed Vietnam and dumped on this heroic country more explosives, than all warring countries in the First and Second world wars, in a place the taken.
            but today learn Russia how to build the constitutional state.
            Maybe will remember about occupation and a partition of Czechoslovakia, Lidice, Auschwitz, Maydanek.
            Forgot? That in the years of World War II all Czechoslovakia from morning to the night worked for fascist Germany, delivering it military equipment, ammunition, the food, regimentals and footwear.
            It to you not Yugoslavia which delayed on itself in severe 1941 of 650000 Hitlerites — is 35 fascist divisions.
            Forgot? That many thousands of Czechs, Slovaks, Poles, Romanians, Hungarians, Bulgarians, etc. graduated in the Soviet HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS, including in the highest military educational institutions of the USSR

            • Sure , we also did not forget joint russo-german victory parade after they together conquered poland in 1939 . We did not forget russian tanks killing kids in august 1968. We also did not forget 40 years in russian slavery during comunism. We did not forget 200 thousand people that were shot on borders tryong to escape from this russian forced commie paradise.

              • And what horse-radish in 1919 Poland sent troops against the Soviet Russia?

                Where proofs of murders of children tanks?

                And that that the Soviet Union in 1945 lost 600000 people at liberation of Poland.
                It anything doesn’t mean any more?

            • Czechoslovakia traded (or more like was forced to trade) one evil for another, just like Ukrainians at first welcomed the Germans as liberators (from the rotten Soviets), only later to feel the full wrath of the nazi regime – and then got “liberated” again by the same scum that was in charge just a few years before. Forgot?

              Oh yes, I can hear the screams of joy of all those people who suddenly were found “politically untrustworthy” by the puppet communist regime for made-up reasons and to be put into forced labour camps, jailed or simply exterminated. Forgot?

              Or that “little accident” in 1968 when a few Warsaw pact divisions by mistake occupied Czechoslovakia and the Soviets “forgot” to leave for more than 20 years?

              Just like Nazis forced us to work for them, the Soviets and their “Council for Mutual Economic Assistance” were sucking us dry and only repaid the debt last year?

              There’s much more, but I won’t waste any more of my time.

              When some people praise or even say that they want those “old times” back they are being selfish to the max – they would like to trade other peoples’ freedom or even lives for their own convenience. And that’s something that can’t be let to happen.

                Who told you that we want to return old times?
                These are your conjectures no more.
                I want that in last history were not only minuses.
                Agree pluses was enough.

                  Your arguments are the exact reason why history needs to be reminded.
                  No matter how many people were treated reasonably well in exchange for keepeing their mouth full & shut and turning a blind eye, there were countless others that were just born in the wrong family or did not share the same political values and expressed them publicly – those were criminalized and oppressed.

                  No amount of “sugar” is worth this.

  10. I am part Hungarian so I know more of the Hungarian uprising but am aware of the 1968 Czech uprising.

    When I was in Jr High School one of my teachers told her story in front of a class about how how her family fled Hungary in 1956.

    I have read “Bridge At Andau” but have read very little about what went on with Czech uprising.

    I would be interested in watching this movie when released (would need subtitltes).

        • You people should start learn history and stop jumpwagooning on antiamerican propaganda. Your hate of McDonalds is good for your body, but some people from CSSR (like me) still remember what it is like to live under direct Moskva political influence – absolut propaganda, state security arresting people and tanks from time to time… Uncomparable to current state. Please think first, then write. ;-)
