Storm on graphic issues

Source: http://world-of-kwg.livejournal.com/267947.html

Hello everyone,

Storm recently made a post, wishing everyone all the best in the upcoming new year and is asking, if there is something the players don’t like about current graphics, whether it makes eyes hurt and why and if there is anything new the players would like to see, graphics-wise.

Storm adds that they know about current performance issues in WoT and are working on fixing it. Currently, developers are working on full multicore support for the render – Storm states that there is a lot of work left to be done, in fact it is a complete render system overhaul, there will be a lot of more optimizations.

From the discussion:

- there is currently a bug where the replays are not saved properly (only the last one is saved), it will be fixed
- there will be no such thing as one “HD client” patch, textures and models will be improved throughout the entire next year
- there is enough content scheduled to come out, so much that WG has a problem finding suitable candidates for outsourcing to do it fast, even if the price offered is high
- the first vehicles to be reworked into HD will be the “legendary” mass produced vehicles like Tiger (SS: eg. not a single nation)

- there will be map overhauls in order to make the maps look more “atmospheric”: currently, developers are working on the Prokhorovka map, there will be destroyed tanks, AA guns, field guns, fires, smoke and air combat in the sky (this is not just for historical battles, but for random too)
- apparently the “old” Prokhorovka map will remain as a map and this “new” Prokhorovka will be in the game as a separate map
- Storm states that it’s very complicated to create deformable terrain in WoT, because it would have to be done serverside, so terrain like in Spin Tyres will not come
- currently, an “improved tank movement model” is being developed, that will take torque and shifting gears and slippery terrain into account (so the tank movement is more realistic). WG develops this so that they actually went to military testing ground, borrowed a T-72 and BMP and tested it. Even the physics programmers were driving it, so they know what they are doing. This will come soon, prototype model is already working.
- the boxes and other stuff on the tank will also move with the tank movement (“bounce”) and also the tank getting dirty from mud by driving through it
- the realistic movement mentioned above will be calculated by the server, eg. no extra computer load
- explosions will be made the way they are in WoWp
- the “hexagonal wheels” and other “rough angles” will be fixed in the HD models
- there will be new (better) anti-aliasing
- there will be new grass render (“SpeedTree”), it’s being worked on – hopefully fixing the situation where the grass disappears after 50 meters
- Storm states that the piece of information that without mist, FPS is higher than with it is obsolete
- there was a longer discussion about the “mist” in WoT, Storm concluded with saying that there might be too much of it in WoT and that he will pass it on to the specialists
- apparently, “microfreezes” in WoT can be solved by updating graphic card drivers according to Storm
- Storm states that increased load on the graphic card and CPU when in bushes is normal, because several transparent layers take a lot co calculate
- the old render won’t be removed for now
- Storm confirms there will be dynamic dirt covering the tanks
- multicore support will not come anytime soon (Storm doesnt mention any ETA)
- apparently, WG is also working on the gun blast and shell impact becoming a light source
- there will also be various levels of wind, swaying the trees
- regarding the brightness of maps (the way it is in War Thunder), they tried to do that on the Highway map and the forums were full of whine like “MY EYES TOO BRIGHT!!”
- Storm agrees that desert maps are too bright and Murovanka too dark, he states they’ll think about it
- internal space of the tank will definitely not be modelled, Storm states that it would double the size of the client and it would take like two years to only model the cockpits
- it’s possible WG will add a “gun POV” like in Xbox WoT
- there will be “very few new tanks” in 2014
- Storm states that regarding alleged incorrect work of the MM mechanism, he still has too little data
- the developers were considering putting the camera POV lower, so the tank doesn’t look like a toy as much, but then decided it would make the game less playable
- DX11 support will not come anytime soon
- it’s not possible to increase the skybox texture resolution four times

And I thank you Frank, that you made my time spent with WoT more bearable and fun. For all of us. Wish you all good in 2014.

//////- there will be map overhauls in order to make the maps look more “atmospheric”////////////
Good to hear that, hopefully that won’t mean adding too much graphic features that won’t be able to turn off (like if they added bloom that I wouldn’t be able to turn off).

Did skyboxes in 8.10 change or is it just me ?

/////////////- regarding the brightness of maps (the way it is in War Thunder), they tried to do that on the Highway map and the forums were full of whine like “MY EYES TOO BRIGHT!!”////////////

Too much contrast sometimes. Besides, when I play in (borderless) windowed mode, it’s not so easy to set up brightness.

  2. Wow this is the best news so far for me ! So informative! thanks SS on job well done mate!

As regards to “there will be no such thing as one “HD client” patch, textures and models will be improved throughout the entire next year” – I am sure Soviet tanks will be the first to receive the overhaul.

  3. Yeah yeah, dream on Storm, dream on.
    *cough*Havoc*cough*

Hes asking for player opinions 80% to give people hope WOT will ever look half as good as WT, and 20% for the actual opinions.

  4. “Currently, developers are working on full multicore support for the render – Storm states that there is a lot of work left to be done, in fact it is a complete render system overhaul”

    so like a year waiting?

    ______________
I just want this to come true and i’ll be happy.

  6. This is great and all in reading, but I’ll only be truly interested when my i7, 24 gigs of ram, and GTX-770 are giving me constantly more than 60fps instead of this b/s where it bounces between 5fps and 65 fps in the engines current configuration.

    • Well that’s all in your end since I can run it on a similar rig, except for the RAM which I only have 8GB of, on highest with at least 100+ fps.. Did you ever consider turning off hyperthreading on the CPU since that is a know cause of fps drops while playing certain games like WoT for an instance?

      • Well of course your fps will go up when your ping goes up since the lag will give you less moving objects to render.
SeanPwnery’s problem is most likely due to him not disabling hyperthreading on his CPU though..

        • I’ll need to look into that.. the hyperthreading thing.

How are you guys getting 90+ fps? Are you using monitors with greater than 60hz refresh rates? Mine is a 120hz, but in native resolution (1920×1080), it doesn’t appear to be able to do better than 60 =/

          • The FPS they are talking about, is the theoretical FPS their system could display, if the monitor could support such a refresh rate. My monitor is capable of 72 Hz, and many of the “3D” monitors can display 120Hz. So it is entirely possible for their monitors to display those refresh rates.

  7. Looks like they’re getting ready to meet WT head on. I hope that there will be a lot of competition between them, this way we get 2 really good games for us to play :3

    • WT already has deformable terrain, multicore and Dx11 support… basically everything WoT will have in the next xx years. Yes even turrets blowing off from ammo explosion. They even have working MacOS version of the game, not to mention that the PS4 version is identical to the PC version, not like WoT XboX…
      This isn’t competition…

      Best thing:
” WG develops this so that they actually went to military testing ground, borrowed a T-72 and BMP and tested it.”

What the fuck they did for 3 years? They made a tank game without trying how the EFF a tank works?
I’m living in Hungary and even I drove a tank (T-55A was ~400 euro for an hour, with 4 friends it wasn’t too much).

  8. Does my fps being slaughtered count? it’s already slaughtered BEFORE I use the superawesome colour filter. Now I can’t run it on 70 fps in Max =(

    • poor you. If only your monitor/lcd dispaly was able to output more than 60 …
if only your eye was able to actually notice the difference.

btw. colour filters didnt affect framerate at all. 0 difference.

That would be an awesome job!! “Hey guys lets go drive a real tank today!” Sigh my jobs have never been that cool…

  10. Storm recently made a post, wishing everyone all the best in the upcoming new year and is asking, if there is something the players don’t like about current graphics, whether it makes eyes hurt and why and if there is anything new the players would like to see, graphics-wise

I would wish that improved graphics wouldnt make WoT so damn foggy and blurred. I wish its tank models would look as clear as in standard render.

    • turn off lightning quality, turn off blur, turn off antialiasing and turn off postprocessing.

Well, you can as well use the standard rendering then …

  11. - the developers were considering putting the camera POV lower, so the tank doesn’t look like a toy as much, but then decided it would make the game less playable

Oh WG! Please do this oh please please please!!! Because they really look like Toys. This would be so great.!!!

  12. Most of it sounds really good, appears they got inspired by the War Thunder tanks beta to step their game up a notch.
But with all the HD stuff coming they really need to do multicore support. I mean, seriously.

  13. “- there will be “very few new tanks” in 2014″

I might actually grind through all the tanks this year, then!

  14. My opinion: Every graphics element will be updated and overhauled but nothing will be done for the performance and optimalizing. Multi-core support will come later too, great so basically WoT will get higher system requirements and players with older PCs (like me) can set the settings lower again.
I think WG should imporve the performance first: multi-core support should have a high priority and maybe a brand new engine would be the wisest. Then buying more stable servers,so they can handle more players(less lag) and more graphical elemtents server side.
These improvements sound incredibly awesome, but I think less than 50% of the players will enjoy the full beauty of the game including me,the funny thing is that my PC can run Battlefield 3 on maximum settings smoothly with 40FPS,and Battlefield 3 looks way better than WoT,and it has destruction and huge armored+infantry combats. I get stable 70FPS on the lowest settings in WoT and the games looks horrible on lowest settins,so I’m on medium settings, but with maximum texture quality and track effects, taces turned off. I get 35-40FPS but sometimes I get huge drops, especially when the severs are full.
I really appreciate the work of WG,but they could do a lot of things more professional…this is my honest opinion. Thank you for reading.

  15. “- there will be “very few new tanks” in 2014″

    I bet they will forget their promise about the Sturmtiger ;-;

  16. why are the shadows rubbish now. they are lots of dots ? they looked so much better in 8.9

  17. - apparently the “old” Prokhorovka map will remain as a map and this “new” Prokhorovka will be in the game as a separate map

Great… 2 times the same horrible map in the rotation just what we need.

  18. interesting post.

multi core wint come with HD things ?! that means fps killing !
other than that… i like this things : bouncy boxes, tank getting dirty !, gun POV,
and omg that will take torque and shifting GEARS and slippery terrain into account
cant wait for thouse sessy patches

  19. I hope they will finally add proper suspension physics with each road wheel moving separately!

Btw, it is “graphics” issues (with an “s”) in the end. “Graphic” means “strong” or “drastic” – “graphic language” would mean using strong language using curses, four letter words and the like.
