23.2.2014

Yesterday, there was no new info and today, it’s not much better. Developers are hard at work on 9.0 :) But you can check The_Chieftain’s post about General Patton and his obsession with machineguns…

- FOV will be returned to the way it was in 8.10 sooner than in 9.0, Evilly thinks it’s gonna happen next week by a micropatch

  1. Can we confirm if General Patton was part Ork? He seems very enthralled with the power of Moar Dakka

    • If nothing else the sheer amount of bullets Stuarts can spit at infantry in ye olde Close Combat series is hilarious to watch.
…those really need a mod that reskins the little buggers red. >_>

    • He believed himself to be a reincarnation of a Roman Legionnaire from Julius Gaius Caesar’s campaign in Gaul – now modern-day France (or possibly Caesar himself), which is close enough I suppose.

      • correction: Patton believed he had been a Carthaginian fighting the Romans, then thought he had been a Legionary (near or at Langres where Patton served in WW1, no less) with Caesar in Gaul and had also fought in Napoleon’s armies in another life.

I use Max zoom out so every things just normal in 8.11

      • yeah i use a mod for putting it back like it was in 8.10 if you have a mod where a file called avatar_input_handler is in then it can be that that changed your FOV back to normal one

    • If you use xvm or any of the other mods that incorporate that specific file “avatar_input_handler.xml” which has some FoV settings at the top that’s probably it.

I messed around a bit by changing them to high and low extremes and unmodded with a replay. The extremely low FoV (30 degrees or so was what I tried) was really uncomfortable to watch.

But as long as you stick to normal values you can mod it just fine now to your liking.

Why WG broke what was not broken?

    • I suspect it went along the lines of this:
      1. Random development changes make it use one fixed FoV (can’t imagine it being intentional design)
      2. Based on the russian population they didn’t expect massive trouble (source: was referred to in an older FTR Q&A translation)
      3. Complaints from the test server were ignored and it wasn’t patched prior to deployment
      4. A while after maybe they did realise it mattered or they knew and just didn’t care enough to put it in the 8.11 patch.

I’m still quite confused by it, strange how a company can deliver such a thing for a non-console game these days. Drove my tanks around a bit unmodded at 8.11 it didn’t actually make me sick but did give me a borderline uncomfortable feeling typically after an hour.
