RU Server: Map-making Competition

Source: http://worldoftanks.ru/ru/news/3/cartography_contest/

Hello everyone,

this is something that actually caught my eye. Wargaming runs a competition, where Russian server players are submitting their map proposals in two categories:

- historical map
- e-sports map

Top three creators win a gaming computer (1st place prize: i7/8GB RAM/1TB drive/120 GB SSD/ GTX770) – what is interesting is that the first place for historical maps gets to be rewarded with a better computer. One user can participate in only one of these categories. Another interesting thing is the way the historical maps are made. They have to be:

- based on real location, referring to an important battle event
- located in Europe or USSR
- the map has to be based on aerial photos from WW2 and has to be recognizable
- following locations are not allowed: “Minsk, Stalingrad, Kharkov, Königsberg, Leningrad, Poznan, Caen, Berlin, Köln” (that means that these locations are considered for implementation already, nice!)
- the type of the map has to be city, battlefield or mix of the two
- size of the map: 800*800 or 900*900 meters
- all seasons allowed
- the map has to have 3-4 obvious directions for attack
- map has to be balanced for both teams
- considerable terrain level differences are undesirable
- the map has to be viable for any tier

The “cybersports” map has roughly the same conditions, but it’s supposed to be smaller (700*700 or 800*800) and the terrain doesn’t have to be strictly historical. The emphasis is on the balance of both sides, the map has to be viable for team battles.

Hell, I could use that rig :) Why don’t we have something like that in Europe? Oh, right, no map competitions for you, bloody capitalists. Seriously though, I love these design competitions. It’s much more fun than ye olde “make most damage” stuff. In case you are interested what Russian players are submitting, you can view their work here.

  1. so WG take the easy road make players to do the map making for them hehhehe , but jokes aside this can mean that HB and E-sports can get maps just for them not using normal maps which will be very nice

  2. - the map has to be viable for any tier
How the fuck is 700*700 viable at tier X?
Every time I play Province in CW is a pain. /facepalm

        • Oh I mixed up the categories, silly me. Still seems kinda small….
I wish they would make bigger maps already(just put spawns relatively close so that slow tanks can get to action?).

    • Ensk is the same nominal size as Province. What makes the latter unsuited for high tiers is the fact that teams can spot and engage each other across the valley, not the size per se. A buildup map should work fine.

  3. “what is interesting is that the first place for historical maps gets to be rewarded with a better computer” –

yes, they explained that by stating that the ideal e-sport map has to be symmetric, at least with regard to the key-points influencing the gameplay, whereas the historical map should be done based on aerial shots from ww2, which is harder to do.

  4. My first reaction after seeing what the players submitted: We want city maps, many routes to chose from and good cover from arty and sniping TDs.

  5. Mhh didnt they say just a few days ago that they dont want to have special maps for HB and/or Esports. Or is this ok because it will be a “normal” map usable for HB/esports?

  6. Top three creators win a gaming computer (1st place prize: i7/8GB RAM/1TB drive/120 GB SSD/ GTX770) – what is interesting is that the first place for historical maps gets to be rewarded with a better computer.

Does this Computer have no FPS drops and no CTDs? :-)

  7. “the map has to have 3-4 obvious directions for attack” – oh fuck. So they’ll keep on spamming 3-lane maps like they did through all these years. Maps that managed to break with this silly paradigm can be counted on a fingers of one hand. They either need to be brave and break up with that or turn WoT into MOBA if they’re so very much for this type of gameplay.

  8. I think some of the maps from Company of Heroes would work, if scaled up. I’m certain The Sheldt could make a fun map at a different scale.

    • I think Sheldt would be too open. At least the bridge of death will be indestructible >_>

But there were some nice city maps in CoH though.

  9. - based on real location, referring to an important battle event

What is “important”? important for them or for the war or for a battalion?

    – located in Europe or USSR

    So no desert? Again??? :(

    – the map has to be based on aerial photos from WW2 and has to be recognizable

Yeah because that is sooooooo easy to obtain…

    – size of the map: 800*800 or 900*900 meters

    That’s a small map :S

    – the map has to have 3-4 obvious directions for attack

World of DOTAs again. Why can’t we get 10 or 12 routed maps???

    – map has to be balanced for both teams

Why should i do better job then you WG? :D

    – considerable terrain level differences are undesirable

But SerB and Storm hate flat maps!!!1!!ONE! And what is “considerable”? A percentage or a standard? Or both?

    – the map has to be viable for any tier

Any tier? Does this means we will see “only Tier 1″ HB? Cause it would rock :)

    • Just one point: 10-12 ways: Have u ever tried to put 10-12 ways on one of WG small maps? 10 out of those 12 ways wouldnt have enough space for a tank bigger than loltraktor to pass it :P

  10. Too bad. I have tons of material on Berlin when I was researching map improvements for Red Orchestra.
Hmm, but EU is not participating anyway though :/

  11. SS,can you please make a post with detailed description what to submit? Maybe we can make ourselves our little FTR competition ;) , even if we can’t win a computer :P . Just to brainstorm good map ideas.

    • Wait… we could make some maps, SS could then win the PC and his old rig could be raffled between the partitipiants or given to the guy who could win it…

  12. They should release an SDK instead. The game is server side based, no worries about cheats, modifying gameplay etc.Just a simple map editor.

Opening MS Paint and drawing a few blocks here and there, some lines etc. that everyone can do. Making that layout actually work in-game gameplay wise is a completely different story. It involves alot more work. I wont be surprised to see some minimap screenshots taken from Company of Heroes 2 lol!

  13. Awww, I had some great ideas for historical battles.
My idea was Arnhem, the Dutch city which the allies failed to capture during operation market garden in 1944.

  14. Funnily enough, “re-designing” a map, or in real terms, fixing a map, was one of the criteria for entering EU Supertest…

And funnily enough the revised El Halluf is almost identical to all my suggestions…

    …but hey.. I’m an evil kapitalistic pig…

    • Hidden village. That map is a mountain.
Dragon Ridge. That map is a valley.
      :)

  15. I would really really like a historical mode map with early French and German tanks. And replace the Pz. III A with an actual Pz. III early variant.

  16. Reciently here on FTR, there was a historical map thread. I had said it would be cool to fight for the tractor works in Stalingrad. I am not home, so I’m sorry I don’t have access to his name or web site, but one of the readers here, showed me his beautiful map proposal of the Stalingrad Tractor Works. I think it fits all of the criteria. It would be a great map to fight on. Sadly he is not on the RU server, and they are not taking Stalingrad maps.
    It’s a shame.
    Appy

  17. What a shame that there’s no NA server competition for this sort of thing – I could probably come up with something interesting, both for historical and e-sport maps.
