9.2 – Official Model Changes

Hello everyone,

if you’ve seen the 9.2 test server patch notes, you know that several tanks’ models are listed as “improved” – until there is an unofficial full list of changes, this is the list we know about. The English patchnotes say the following:

- Visual models of the following tank models improved: ISU-152, SU-122?, M18 Hellcat, M3 Lee, M4A3E2 Sherman Jumbo, Tortoise, Black Prince, Conqueror Gun Carriage, Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. D, Sturmpanzer I Bison, Pz.Kpfw. B2 740 (f) and Type 4 Chi-To.

If you are wondering what “SU-122?” is, it’s SU-122A – the reason the question mark is there is that they copied the text from Russian forums and probably filtered it through some editor, that doesn’t display cyrillic letters properly and turns azbuka into questionmarks.

I went through the models displayed and here’s what I found – a part of the models listed above (specifically, ISU-152, SU-122A, M3 Lee, Sturmpanzer I Bison, B2 740(f) and Chi-To) have had no changes whatsoever – or rather, it’s possible a pixel was changed here or there, but I haven’t been able to find them.

M18 Hellcat was lowered a tiny bit and the texture now displays more “wear and tear”, so it doesn’t look that much plastic.

The same change happened to the elite turret.

The Jumbo Sherman was retextured – contrary to the way it was done earlier, some parts of the textures are drawn directly and not as a part of that new 9.0 shader system, maybe this was done to increase performance?

Tortoise got reshaded a bit and the tracks texture got changed (the dark one is new)

The same thing happened with the Conqueror Gun Carriage (the dark tracks one is new)

The Black Prince 17pdr gun got a bit changed – the gun is of the same length, but you can see how the barrel was “sunk” a bit more into the turret.

Panzer IV Ausf.D – again, shading got changed a bit on some parts, the “lighter” one is new

And, last but not least, Object 430 – the dark one is new. As you can see, some parts of texture seem to have “shifted” slightly, but in the end, the size of the model didn’t change as far as I can see.

    • Luckily, WoT tank viewer works on medium details even on older computers. Just can’t run two at the same time like I could before 9.0 :(

      • hey SS, I think that something is wrong with the tank viewer’s way of displaying the tracks for HD models.
The “improvement” on the Tortoise tracks is actually the track model from SD model.
This can be noticed also at the Hellcat model: the tracks are displayed as a single rubber band, when the original tracks have track elements way better differentiated

I believe it’s best to make the comparison pictures with in-game screenshots, and on a powerful rig, because some of the textures look really weird (see the Jumbo where the tank is darker than the tracks)

I would have helped you with the pics, but now i’m travelling and my laptop can’t handle WoT :)

        • In game there is some kind of tesselation on HD tracks, and both tank viever and tank inspector can’t render them properly

          • Early HD models had their tracks done like in warthunder, with the rubber band having multiple layers to fake track parts that would stick out. That was done using the old model format, so the tank viewer miraculously had no problem rendering that. Sometime around 9.0, this was replaced with actual tracklinks moving along a spline which the tank viewer has no idea how to render. Guess WG just now is getting rid of the obsolete pseudo-HD tracks to save space, so the viewer has to fall back on low quality tracks used for far-away tanks…

          • quick, donate much $ for SS, so he can afford a decent computer! (i would do it myself, but aint got a single penny) :)

Btw am i the only one who cant log into the TS..? I press log in, it says connecting, stays like that for 2 min, then it tells to me “unable to connect the server, the server may be unavailable…blablabla.” just like there werent a test server running..

            • same here with TS first it said not able to get personal files and now it freezes at logging in thingy and no mods installed downloaded completely fresh for the 6th time now still not working…

@SS you REALLY need a new computer dude… what do you have in your PC? must be very bad cuz i have a laptop for school and i get over 10 fps on all max settings in wot and can easy handle 2 tankviewers at the same time. well easy ok it loads a lil longer but its usable

  1. I hope they’ve finally fixed the issue with Tortoise tracks being out of sync with the ground they’re moving over. That shit gives me motion sickness.

  2. Jumbos new “darker” look looks like graphical glitch :D
It’s probably becase of that tankviewer…

btw why not taking screenshots in WoT client on maxed out details ? Its not like you need 60fps to take a screenshot in garage….

  3. Silent, what about bugged collision models on 430 and 430 II ? Have they been fixed (collision model smaller than actual size) ?
