Wargaming Disbands Warplanes Dev Studio, Fires Staff

Hello everyone,

according to the news linked above (thanks to Maiorboltach for bringing it to attention), Wargaming announced they closed the office of Persha Studios in Kharkov (Ukraine). The Kiev office does continue its work. There were cca 50 people working in the Kharkov office. The key staff was offered positions in Minsk in Kiev, the rest was fired. The decision was, according to Wargaming Russian representative, taken “in connection with the restructuralization of the company’s web department”.

Persha Studios was the game designer studio responsible for World of Warplanes and was recently working on World of Tanks: Generals online card game, as well as creating specialized web application for Wargaming. The studio was independent until 2011, when it signed an exclusive contract with Wargaming, becoming for all intents and purposes Wargaming branch.

  1. In gaming terms, Warplanes must rank as one of the greatest missed opportunities of all time.
Huge captive player base, unified accounts, potential to combine some activities (such as clan wars or strongholds), and more monetization through premium content.

All wasted because the game sucked donkey balls.

    • I wonder.

Most players who were in WoT were interested in tanks. The players who liked planes mainly were already in WT for some two or so years and the “realism” vs “arcade” (however silly it is) debate was underway for more than a year.

WoWp was reasonably good (and it gets better throughout patches – I play it, albeit rarely), but it didn’t have potential to drag over people from WT (because they already got used to something) and it didn’t manage to get people from WoT (because they aren’t interested in planes).

The only way it could’ve been successful was to rip off WT completely and improve it – but OTOH that would’ve been troublesome, because at least a part of WT community would deny it as copycats. And it would take longer to develop.

Really, I think the “success” it got (WG considers it a success in regards of money and player base) is almost the best it could’ve achieved. It could’ve been a “bit” better by some decisions – but not by much.

      Anyway:
Huge captive player base – not really. Ppl interested in flying have high tiers in WT, WoT player base doesn’t have much ppl interested in flying.
unified accounts – they had it from the start, helped only a tiny bit.
potential to combine some activities – that’s for a long term work, especially considering CWs are “still” in beta. WG at least tried with combined tournaments.
more monetization through premium content – that happened – seen quite a few premiums throughout games.

Interested in your opinion to this, too. What else could there have been to defeat WT at the time of release?

      • What I meant in my points was that they had all the things already lined up prior to release (big audience from WoT, unified accounts, a monetized playerbase, etc) but wasted it all by releasing a game which was shit, got shitter, and now remains shit. It looks bad, plays bad, and is laggy as hell on my PC (which plays WoT fine on most settings).

WT isn’t a great deal better because whilst the controls and flight models work, the hit module + BR system don’t really encourage a long gaming session – getting insta-wrecked by some git in a multi-cannon fighter several BRs higher does get very boring very quickly.

The interesting thing for me, however, is that WT is very quiet most evenings… extremely quiet, often I can only get a game on EU cluster by going for Tier I/II arcade.

I’d like to know how quiet WoWP is at the moment, but since the last patch the game refuses to work.

        • I recently played and from what I saw, during day 7-10 are players rest are fill-up bots (mostly waiting under minute), at night it’ 3-5 players on same team. rest are bots (they never split players under some limit, don’t know high it is). It’s worth the try, just don’t expect too much from it.

    • WG was fantastically ignorant of what is important in an airplane game.

      There is NO Tempest, Typhoon…
      OMG NO P-47 thunderbolt.
      NO Hawker fucking HURRICANE????
I had all these plus about 10 non-zero Japanese fighters in Microsoft’s Combat Flight Simulator 2 (God I miss that game). The Jake, the Ki-100, The Shinden Kai, just shitloads.
I had the Italian Macchi Veltro, the Regianne.
The possible player base of aerophiles and history buffs were ignorred.
They should have about 200 planes in that game EASILY.
They just have their heads up their asses when it comes to knowing what people want. What *I* want.

      • If they add Typhoon or something, they won’t add another plane someone else will miss. Plane selection isn’t important – if you add content regularly it will be there eventually.

        • ur CLUELESS. If WOWP was the exact copy of WT then it would have pulled from WT but it sucks so it pulled NOBODY. Plane selection is of primary importance esp when ur going up against an established opponent. Of course WG considers it a success, until they turn off the servers. U can also make the same argument for armored warfare, but their best strategy is to make AW PVP very similar to WOT but with modern tanks and then add something new such as the player missions vs AIs and cool shit like smoke screens to lure players away from WOTs.

          • nope it’s not the planes WoWp had planes while missing as some you mentioned but it’s the controls that killed it were it felt like your flying bricks not acutall planes
in WT planes responce 100% better then in WoWp most of there flight models are there and the planes react instantly to every change
in WoWp you were feeling like you were flying a brick not a plane
that’s the reason that wowp didnt do anything better

alsoo HP bars on planes? really??

            • It wasn’t even that. The main issue here was Persha got handed development of a game from the ground up when they had ZERO experience in doing so. Yes, they did have experience in masking graphics for other games, but had zero clue on how to make an update or how to balance one plane to another.

            • LOL, always people from WT sits there and say “alsoo HP bars on planes? really??”

You know that in WT that little plane icon to the left that goes from white to red to black as you take damage or lose a section?? Well, guess what that is a HP indicator also. Just because it does not have a numerical value and a bar above the plane in front of you, does not mean that its not an HP indicator. Its just represented differently in WT.

To truly not have a HP/Damaged Indicator, then you should have to pan on your plane to see the actual damage that you have taken and you would just know how the plane feels when a section is damaged.

              • That’s actually not true
I’ve had my wing rip off with one bullet, other times it eats a whole ammo load. It all depends on what it hits, wing spar or fabric, and what kind of bullet it is.
The plane icon is just to tell you what’s been hit
                pink and its been hit
black engine says that it’s going to die soon
color of the wing gives you a general idea of the condition its in and how much lift you can get out of it
                etc.

  2. Wrong header, man. Total Persha Studia staff in all offices was more then 350 employees and it is Persha Studia main office in Kiev that is responsible for Warplanes. It continues to operate as usual. So “Wargaming Disbands Warplanes Dev Studio” is a lie.

  3. Not so good for those who got fired… For all the negativity about World of Warplanes its a pity its not done better as competition might motivate Gaijin to sort out their battle rating system.

    • I want to like it, I really do – but it’s unplayable. The engine simply doesn’t work for aerial combat… At least WT feels like a bit like you’re in control of an aeroplane.

The BR system in WT is so stupid I’ve stopped playing it for now. That and the ludicrous hit box thing in the wings which allows late ME109s and FW190s to kill you with literally one shell over and over again.

  5. WoWP failed miserably because in the early alpha/beta they focused exclusively on full flight gear setups, no flight gear? lol you pleb! go die behind the corner!. Yet they focused on making it hardcore arcade with no realism whatsoever.

They implemented keyboard/mouse support way too late and ruined the entire game with the forced input lag and terrible controls early on, changed the physics and flight models to cope with the bad input. And graphics subpar.

Lets face it, the fact that War Thunder already existed and felt (and still feels) epic to fly with mouse/keyboard in arcade, there just isnt a target audience for WoWP.

    • Lel, Ew, first you list most of the valid points from the time before WoWp release, but you screw up all by mentioning WT arcade as epic. Come on, you can’t be serious. WT arcade is a joke. WT is good because of realistic and sim modes, not arcade.

  6. This is great news, hopefully it means WoWP can get overhauled and escape its death spiral.

      • Wrong buddy. I never played WT and dont intend to. I enjoy WoT. But i have that ability to know how a game is going to be. Just saying.

        • “But i have that ability to know how a game is going to be. Just saying.”

Translation: “I’m a teenager who thinks he knows everything.”

          • Why do you think WoWS won’t suck as WoWP does?
From Alpha-Testers I heard WoWP relies much more on teamplay then WOT does.
Given this, how should WoWS work?

  7. Welp, I really wanted to like wowp. And I did, BUT – ground textures not loading properly and CTDs just ruined it for me. Maybe next update, if there’s any?

  8. Traditionally I have actually been a lot more interested in aircraft than tanks. I only started playing WoT because I had some friends who got me into it. We had been playing some of the early Call of Duty games online against each other (closed server). The United Offense version had tanks you could jump into and shoot each other and that got them interested in finding a tank game. They found WoT and eventually got me playing it as well.

That said, I don’t expect to ever play either War Thunder or Warplanes. I don’t really enjoy the game play of flight games; too much going on at once, I find it more stressful than fun. As for WT tanks, if I wasn’t already invested in WoT I might give it a try, but since I am it doesn’t really offer anything I am interested in. It looks like a lot of fun, but I’m happy with my WWII and 50′s-60′s tanks on WoT. I don’t feel the need for my tank battles to be more “realistic”, though I do like some of the things WT has introduced in ground forces, it isn’t enough to get me to start playing.

On the other hand, I likely will play Armored Warfare. Based on the limited amount of it I have seen it appears to be basically WoT with modern armor. That, I can get behind. It won’t stop me from playing WoT, but I do expect to play AW also.

  9. Same thing is going to happen to the World of Boats division as well. They should use this as a warning and as an example. WG should just understand by now, WoT is it and the only reason it lasted this long was support for old computers and it’s dedicated following. Clean house now and focus on what is actually making money.

Someone has to tell them it’s over soon for them, this is it! Enjoy it while it lasts.

  10. “We have a badass over here” :D
Can you tell me how promisingly good Killing Floor 2 looks then :P

  11. Is anyone surprised at all? I gave WoWP no more than 1-2 years before they’d have to start cutting staff and skimping on server capacity. It won’t be long before they have to close down the game. It’s just not economically sustainable to have only 800 people playing the game during peak times.

  12. Air combat games have been done to death. Wot succeeded because it was tanks, not planes. Wows has a good chance because there arent many (if any) good ship games.

  13. WOWP is actually a good game with two serious flaws…..

    1. They need to at least DOUBLE the HP Pools of planes….. When a plane at your own tier shoots you down in 10 sec’s not even giving you a chance to dogfight, there is a problem.
WOWS has it right….. you have a chance. Though they need to reduce the torpedo damage.

    2. When there are plenty of people in the que at your tier, they need to start a game, instead of making you wait 5 min’s. People don’t want to wait to play a game.

These two reasons are why I stopped playing WOWP twice now….. Get a clue Wargaming.

  14. Piece of shit of a gaming monopoly fucking itself?

    Good news for me.

A piece of shit game dying?

    Good news for me.

On top of that they should’ve killed all the developers via Russian mafia… Because, you know, Stalinist principles of efficency is stronk. You’re good you stay alive. You’re bad and you die.
