World of Warships Q&A

Source: http://blog.worldofwarships.eu/interview-with-artur-associate-publishing-producer/

Hello everyone,

just a quick summary of the recent with some World of Warship producer, nickname Ev1n. The interesting part is, it was basically an “ask me anything”, why don’t we have that in WoT more often?

- you will be able to lob shells over one target to hit a target behind it
- it will be possible to repair turrets that got blown off by a repair kit to a certain extent
- WoWs now have limited dualcore support, full multicore support is being worked on
- right now WoWs has more than 10 maps built, they need to be tweaked for gameplay
- closed beta should start this year
- changing weather won’t come this year
- the best working map size atm is 50x50km
- the game will have slightly bigger PC requirements than WoT (minimum specs are not clear yet)
- regarding the point of view from which you will see the battle:

“Yes, we removed “arty view” as the primary targeting mode in WoWS. Believe me when I say that it made the game very boring to play and broke all immersion. For now we are sticking with a FPS/TPS camera setup, similar to that in WoT for Main Caliber artillery and similarly for torpedoes. We might keep arty mode for shooting at very long ranges, but if we do it will come with a price. Carriers will of course have their own RTS-style top-down interface. Each shell leaves it’s own splashes. :)”

- you won’t be able to hit planes with your main gun shells, explosion shockwave won’t destroy airplanes
- replay function will be added to WoWs
- screen vibrates when there are huge explosions going on, it’s not sure whether it will vibrate also when shooting
- some hybrid aircraft carriers carry strong guns as well
- developers hope for stormy maps with high waves, but there are technical issues with that
- it’s theoretically possible in random battles to have both teams composed of battleships, if noone else is playing at the same time
- it’s theoretically possible friendly planes can damage friendly ships by bombing
- WoWs does not at the moment support Havok
- historical and team battles: “Not like in WoT :)”
- you can change the type of ammunition for main guns and torpedos, for other guns probably not
- there will be “some form of ship customization”
- currently, two modes (unspecified) are planned for the game
- premium account will be shared with WoT
- there will also be premium ships
- carriers will have a limited number of planes, when all get shot down, the carrier won’t be able to launch any more planes
- clans and private match rooms should come shortly after release
- devs are working on nice destruction effects
- you won’t be able to see any crews on the ships
- it’s possible the players will be able to destroy planes, that are present on aircraft carrier decks, ready for take off, but this has to be tested first
- regarding smoke: “You will see this as a visual effect when firing, but it probably won’t stay or affect gameplay. Just cosmetic. However there will be environmental fog which does affect gameplay.”
- there will also be coastal guns present (need to be balanced)
- battleships are OP in large numbers
- apparently, if a carrier gets destroyed, its planes will fly until they run out of fuel
- ramming will make holes in both ships
- sounds will be “as realistic as we can make them”, but it’s hard to find recordings of Yamato gun sounds
- the game will most likely have between 4 and 10 modules to damage
- even non-carrier ships will have some recon hydroplanes for example
- devs are experimenting with respawns as well
- the game already has near misses/hits below waterline mechanism
- crew is being redesigned now (it’s possible there will be only one crew member, the captain)
- there will be no elevator carrier animation, aircraft will simply appear on deck
- float planes will have animated catapults and cranes
- WoWs will probably not have wind and water currents, “too much simulation”
- only main caliber guns have their own ammunition depot
- the game uses Dx9.0c

    • “It would make too much sense for it to happen for WoT”

There’s something similar on the EU server, it’s called “ask me anything, I don’t know anyway (because I neither care for nor know the game with my <500 battles)".

  1. Interesting how they re pushing planes into WoWS while WoWP is pretty much failing atm. Maybe they want all the ppl who want planes to play WoWS instead of WT :)

  2. i wish waves will be an important part of the game.

dual core? good, next step will be adding dual / multi support to WOT

limited number of planes? :/ will be weird; maybe they should add that if there are 2 carriers, and 1 died, the flying planes from the death one, will go t the one that is still alive.

“closed beta”, as only to fiends.. i mean.. “testers”; or you can send a request and you have a chance just by being a wot/wowp player?

    • Well, if amount of planes would be unlimited I suspect carriers would act a lot like they used to in Red Alert 2, but slower (I guess). And this would make them OP as hell.

  3. “- sounds will be “as realistic as we can make them”, but it’s hard to find recordings of Yamato gun sounds”

WG, you can salvage an KV-1 but suddenly Yamato is too hard for you?

    • it is one think to pull a 50 ton KV-1 out of the water, another to save a sunken 70,000 ton ship

    • Well, ignoring the fact it’s been blown in two & it’s the grave of thousands of seamen…

…as long as long as it’s not become a Titanic that cannot support it’s own weight anymore without the support of water it might be possible to salvage the wreck.

Though you’d probably need billions, if not trillions of dollars/euros/pound/shekels/rubles etc etc.

      • I’m pretty sure it’s actualy cheaper to make a 400mm naval cannon from scratch and record off that…

        • actually 460mm :)
Bigger is better USA used “puny” 406mm (16″) ;)

Then again the sound woould probably be very similar to a 15 or 16 inch gun that the other navies use just a wee bit louder so……I guess you don’t want to blow your speakers :)

      • Direct x9 that’s just sad by the time the game gets released Direct x 12 will be out:(

          • Not strictly true as the Xbox one already has some direct x 12 functions and will get the full functions by the end of next year meaning that devs will jump right on it. PC that’s a completely different area but from the material released current direct x 11 hardware will be capable of using some if not all Direct x 12 functions so its not that far off to be honest.

And by functions I mean APIS

    • Toasters don’t support DX10 or 11, so we’re all stuck at the lowest common denominator.

  4. “- you won’t be able to hit planes with your main gun shells, explosion shockwave won’t destroy airplanes”

Wait a minute… but wasn’t there ammunition made specifically for this?
    Like the japanese Sanshiki rounds?

“- historical and team battles: “Not like in WoT :)””

    Thin ice right there.
There is probably no ill intend in this one, but it could basically translate into:
“We won’t fail as hard as the WoT devs did.”

“- closed beta should start this year”

    Honestly? I can wait.
I’d rather have a good closed beta than the rushed out game that is WTGF.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s only slightly worse than WoT was during open beta, but since
the inherent gameplay contents currently available don’t work with WT’s game mechanics
    it’s not a fun experience… and they’re already charging money…
I.e. WoWS devs should take their time.
No need for another WoT 0.9.0 or WTGF…

“- some hybrid aircraft carriers carry strong guns as well”

    Hybrid aircraft carriers?
I guess they mean BBVs and CAVs like the japanese Ise-class?

“- there will be “some form of ship customization””

Just give us a res_mods folder and everything is fine. :P

“- it’s theoretically possible in random battles to have both teams composed of battleships, if noone else is playing at the same time
    - battleships are OP in large numbers”

These two combined are kinda scary…
Limiting ship classes wouldn’t work (See other games that attempted to do so),
so the only way to go with is to make the different ship classes important.
This is probably the single major issue the WoWS devs need to deal with and I’m
interested to see how they’ll handle the balancing.

“- crew is being redesigned now (it’s possible there will be only one crew member, the captain)”

Should be two entities for the crew leveling.
    1. Captain
    2. Crew

A ship is defined by a good crew and a good captain, using only the captain sounds like a rather
cheap option to avoid working out the balancing.

    • “some hybrid aircraft carriers carry strong guns as well”

The US had some Essex class a carriers with larger guns (5 inch I think) that proved to be more of a curse than a blessing by damaging the flight deck with their blast and being impossable to use while flying off and recovering aircraft, ie. most of the time that the carriers where in action. Also if anything gets close enough for those guns to be of any use then the carrier can be considered as lost anyway.

British carriers had armoured flight decks and when they are introduced they should be more proof against dive bombers.

      • Crews mega important as having well drilled damage control and fire fighting teams can save a ship and keep it in action and it comes with hard won wartime experence.

      • One of the Lion Class variants mooted after the war was a Hydrid Battleship/Aircraft carrier.

Though that idea was condemned for obvious reasons!

      • It was the Lexington class with 8″ guns.

Most carriers had guns around 5″ for AA duty near the flight deck, and they didn’t cause damage (or so little to not cause trouble).

  5. Removing arty view was a perfect decision. I started playing with arty again to learn the “blind spots”, but every time in my Birch gun I can’t stop saying to myself that “Why is it fun for any1?? F*ing arty players!…”

    • Get a StPz II with 100% crew. Let the fun begin… =)

SPGs can be more fun then any tank… Why? Its all about the one-shot-kills.

      Back-to-back one shot kills… =)

Got to take the bad with the good to have fun.

      • Oh, I had a lot of one shot kill without aiming (maximum aiming circle size). In higher tier the Birch gun’s HE cant pen heavy tanks but the smaller ones aren’t problems. But it’s still not fun for me.

    • Birch gun has a very inaccurate gun – but you must go through it (and through the Bishop) to get the Bert ;)

  6. Naval games have always been a niche product. I hope this is an exception. It looks like they are doing something like matrix games Carriers at War and HPS’s Midway series where instead of you controlling all ships, and cycling planes on carriers. You control only 1 ship. Since most carriers were 100′s of miles from the action, a 50kmx50km map is a bit small. Looks like it will be visually stunning, but may be a bit boring. They are listening to the alpha players at least and not rushing it out. (Wish t hey did that in WOWP)

  7. I wonder if WoWs will be as much of a fail as WoWp (honestly i don’t know anyone on WoT that plays it, everyone just goes off to play warthunder)

    • The reason WoWp failed is pretty clear, the game mechanics and the whole server-side stuff isn’t suited for planes. It works wonder for tanks though, and it will work just as well for boats.

      • If anything, it’ll rip out a chunk of the old navyfield crowd from their decrepit nest…

  8. sooo carrier gameplay is going to be lile in navyfield? if yes, carrier player wont get bored, as in NF they have a lot to do… can’t wait the closed beta:)

  9. nice Q&A
    - developers hope for stormy maps with high waves, but there are technical issues with that

This is retarded. Battleships and other navy ships can sail in bad weather, but bad weather was always a reason to delay/avoid sea battles, why do the devs want this in game?…

    • They want it for the same reason why we have such retarded close quarters maps in WoT, the kind that no sane tank commander would send his tanks to.

Because 10 year old idiots like eyecandy /

    • your assumption is wrong. From the 1st WW onward battles were held in good and bad weather, indeed bad weather was used as a means to attack the enemy. The idea that ships would stay in port because it was raining is simply to stupid to believe.

This is why dynamic weather and seastates are needed in WOWS, seastates are the equivalent of terrain in WOT. Sadly they will not affect gameplay on launch, we can only hope they will be implemented later.

  10. “Yes, we removed “arty view” as the primary targeting mode in WoWS. Believe me when I say that it made the game very boring to play and broke all immersion.

    • If there will be 50×50 km maps in WoWs, how far usually ship firing at each other? And how small the enemy ship will be in the aiming circle?

      • The range of big guns on battleships would be around 30 km in real life. I’m not sure if they will scale the range down for the gameplay purposes, but if the rage stays as in real life then you wouldn’t be able to even see your target at max range as it would be behind the horizon.

    • “..as the primary targeting mode…”
      ____
      the primary targeting mode
      primary mode
      primary

  11. DX9c isn’t so bad. There are games that looks nice even tho they’re running on it. DX11 won’t hurt WoWP tho. :))

Hybrid Carriers… are they something like Ise and Mogami? o_O) Or something else? Something like Japanese Midway Carrier Force who are a hybrid between carriers and firewood! XD

    • Have gun-warship half carrier. Most nations had some paper ones, but the Japanese had the most.

  12. dx9 seems kinda odd, i could understand dx10 or 10.1, but 9, doesn’t that just make it harder to update in the future as they’d need to convert to dx10+ if new features are added that requires a higher dx?

    • Yes, since with only DX9 they miss tons of features.
      -no geometry shaders
      -no tessellation
      -many performance improvements
      -SM 3.0 maximum
      -no default multi threaded renderer

    • They’re trying to get people with old PCs running XP to play. Or, at least that was the reason thy gave for keeping WoT on DX9.

  13. 50x50km?

So actually larger than these ships can fire? That doesn’t sound very Wg.net to me.

  14. - there will be “some form of ship customization”

I wonder what would that be. In-game customization (if camo is included, that is so unhistorical like what the WT:GF did) or res_mods (That would work! But make it easy to edit).

    - the game will most likely have between 4 and 10 modules to damage

This game will be more realistic than WoT. If Wargaming is the first one release realistic warship game, I wonder what will Gaijin release for their warship.
