World of Tanks Leads to Divorce! Or not.

Hello everyone,

this little story comes from Belarus. Apparently, the “tanks game” (World of Tanks) caused their marriage to divorce.

Apparently, a woman named “Ekaterina” (there is a photo too, but somehow, I don’t think it’s the woman the article is about) married a guy, they moved to a village and apart from some small issues, everything was just peachy, until the villainous husband started playing the evil addictive game World of Tanks! He started spending all his free time in the game and spent also quite a lot of money on it, came home at 15-16PM, started playing and played until midnight every day, even on weekends. He ignored the wife’s pleas to go out or even to have a walk, stating “it’s just a hobby”. He became cruel, aggressive, stopped paying attention to what he was doing and saying (at this point, the woman admits it might have been a little bit her fault, because she started screaming straight away). In the end, she got fed up with it and moved out.

How terrible.

To be quite honest, given the fact it comes from a “lady portal”, the stock nature of photos and everything, I think the story is made up, wouldn’t be the first time. One thing is however interesting about it – even IF it is made up, it shows that in Belarus (and I do believe this can be applied to Russia as well), WoT became such a cultural phenomenon that even woman magazines started to notice. That is not exactly easy to do – only a few games achieved such a status that even non-related media took notice – Counterstrike, World of Warcraft, Call of Duty (related to various controversies such as “No Russian”) and now, World of Tanks. Quite an achievement.

    • This is probably true, my wife has got really pee’d off with me playing ‘Tanks’ She thinks I am addicted, but women don’t understand that you might actually enjoy playing a game more than watching some moronic chick TV like Downton Abbey or suchlike. I talk to her whilst playing but she hates it if I interrupt her TV….!!

I only play for maybe 2 hrs some nights of the week and maybe friday and saturday night, at worst if I am not away working I play 2 hrs a night from 9-11.

Maybe I play too much what do you think?

      • Dunno man, my GF and I play together. She plays her Tier 1, I play my T5-7 and we´re quite enjoying it. She´s always happy about killing a foe and such stuff :)

    • Hello Kitty Adventure!

And I’m not entirely missing the truth here, it’s (the Hello Kitty franchise, not the game itself) been deemed ‘satanic’ by one catholic school here, sparking nation-wide coverage of the issue.

      • Or maybe it’s his fault as well, because he didn’t communicate: “I will be practically gone for two weeks now, count with it” to her.

I think it lies on both sides, usually.

        • something like that … plus it was not the 1st time that he inmersed in a game for weeks or even 1 month or 2…without even taking the kid to the school.

less than a year later he got bored of the game, after spending money on premium tanks and 2 years of premium account, and left… just like that.

  1. I am no Russian and I live in Belarus. It’s a phenomenon here for sure. In the last company I worked, from the porters to the accountants everybody plays it. I mean most men with computer. A lot of stories like this and I know my neighbour got a divorce because of wot. She was sick of her husbands addiction and went back to her mothers house, filed a divorce and found a new lover. But hey there are some normal examples like my wife too. She bought me a KV-220 last year and on my birthday made me a cake in shape of a tank.

  2. I met a girl by playing wot :P now we game together, thats much better i guess ^^
hope she ll be my girlfriend in a while ^^

    • No you’re not. The only people I shot were the airport security personnel (in which case I could claim self-defense, because they were armed and shooting at me).

  3. Actually that is exactly my life. The exception being I am mostly retired and can spend whole days at tanking.

In fact, I even decline work on specific days so I can just tank on that day.

    • Fair play am sort of similar at the minute but am younger I only work 20 or so hours a week so I can play for good while for a couple of days a week.

  4. One of my previous girlfriend has quit from our relationship, because of WoT.
How many time I heard, that “are you playing again with that stupid tank game?!”

So she packed and moved. And after it, I had more time and achieved 5 more tier X tanks :)

  5. I totally believe this. I had the same showdown and am only playing at the moment because she is away. Once she comes back, I will have to scale back dramatically.
