Interview with Veider, Knopka and one other developer

Hello everyone,

during a recent Wargaming meeting (Japanese-themed, since the Japanese patch is here), several developers were answering questions. Maiorboltach from RU community was kind enough to write a summary in Russian. The answering developers were Stanislav “Veider” Kargin (who was officially confirmed to be Zlobny’s successor as a head of balancing), Darja “Knopka” Klimchuk (who from what I gathered is sort of infamous amongst the Russian players – not sure why) and a member of the videomaking department, Maksim Koltonyuk. And here is the summary:

- it was apparently very easy to balance Japanese tanks, as there are no blatant “one trick ponies” and the tanks are roughly average in all parameters, such as terrain passability, guns etc.
- Japanese tanks will not bring imbalanced vehicles into the game, they fit well into the game
- Chi-Nu Kai (tier 5 prem) represents well the Japanese gameplay, if you master it, you will play well on Japanese tanks


- there is a cooperation between WG and Girls und Panzer directly in Japan, they are working with the voice actresses from the series and the cartoon makers and soon a worldwide GuP campaign will be launched
- Wargaming is also cooperating with SteelSeries, a themed keyboard and headphones will come out soon
- 2014 will be mostly about graphic development, WG is working on that: first will come the HD tank models (the amount of polygons will increase 3-4 times), everything will be re-textured, WoT will most likely completely adopt the WoWp engine
- in 2014 there will also be historical battles (also for Japanese tanks) and garage battles (that might come at the same time as the historical battles), info on that will come soon
- in Japan, World of Tanks is not as popular as in Russia, but WG is advertising it there heavily and hopes for the best
- there was a WG meeting about the map creation, WG has decided to change the map creation principles and to introduce new tools. New maps to come will be city maps: Kharkov, Minsk, Königsberg and Stalingrad, they will come in 1st quarter of 2014
- WG would like to have all classes for Japanese tree, heavy branch will most likely appear, but the TD’s are a problem as there are very few of those, there are enough arty vehicles for an arty branch apparently, but there is no guarantee that it will come out in 2014
- when introducing new tanks, the age of the tank is not the main issue, the limit is the appearance of electronic fire control systems, smoothbores, reactive armor – those will definitely never appear in World of Tanks
- historical battles will most likely resemble the company mode (some sort of not-so-random player gathering), as players will depend on one another in it. The main problem of historical battles is that the amount of vehicles is strongly limited to the historical ones and the balancing of the vehicles, WG decided to connect the historical battles with the garage mode, eg. one side has one big vehicle (Ferdinand) and the other has tons of small ones, the small ones might “respawn” apparently
- in historical battles there will most likely be pre-selected setups (like, the German side has one Ferdinand and four Panthers. It is also possible the tanks will have their “historical weights” (like, Jagdtiger 480 points, Panzer IV 30 points), apparently there will be cases where there will for example be a Tiger against numerous small vehicles
- garage battles will not interfere with random, currently they are developed in connection with the historical battles
- developers are not satisfied with the skill MM in team battles, this will apparently be fixed, there will also be cybersports interface and simplier interface for team battles

    Probably the fact that she is smokin’ hot. Ahem. A Darn fine looking lady of class.

      Except the fact that all other Japs have gun depression. So if you mastered the Chi Nu Kai you will love them.

    • She got infamous after several answers of questionable quality on forums. For example, closing the thread with ‘Not planned’ comment for national crew voices soon after they were introduced in the game etc.

        • I’m using a 4 YO notebook which was quite cheap back when I bought it (merely 500 bucks), it runs WOT with like 15 – 20 FPS, lots of freezes and way lower FPS when there’s lot of action going on (thank god EU tards camp all day) or when I switch between sniper and arcade. I’m using minimum settings and WOT tweaker.
          :(

        • Time isn’t the best indicator of quality…
          I have here a 5 y/o desktop pc that can run WoT fine on med-high =)

          • I’m using pen and paper. IT works awesome. When ever i get spotted i put a brick wall in front of me to absorb the shots.

    …please do say at least regular vehicle have better depression and mobility than CNK.

      • The regular chi nu has -10 depression whereas the Kai gets -6.

        The Chi Nu also has 15 hp/ton whereas the Kai has only 11.

        The drawback is that the regular chi nu has weaker turret front armor, but nobody cares about armor on jap tanks anyways. And you could hide most of yourself with that awesome gun depression and use of terrain.

    F*CK YEAH! I wonder what will be done. It’s not usual to have this!
    Oh, BTW, it’s not a ‘cartoon’ but an ‘anime’. Nothing mean, but for some of us, it’s not the same.

    Because she is known as “forum janitor”. She likes to give read-only for every stupid question without bothering to find out the real situation in the development or read answers of other developers like Storm, Serb and so on.

  8. I just hope they improve the performance of the WOWP engine then. Because as it is it runs worse than War Thunder while looking terrible in comparison.

  9. WoWP engine?…Considering how bad WoWP runs,thats not a good sign…
    Altho that is also down,to a large part,to the fact that they put WAY too many AI controlled objects and gimmicks into the maps that you cant turn off.

  10. Great news about the WoWP engine. On my machine it gets double the FPS of the WoT engine.

    If you suffer poor FPS under WoWP then it’s time to upgrade. A GF660Ti does nicely (1920×1080 @ max detail gets 80 to 120 fps 99% of the time)

  11. I hope “Veider” does a better job and works faster when it comes to balancing tanks. There are still some borderline OP tanks like the KV-1S or AT-7, which even a donkey can master and other tanks that are very hard to master; like the VK 45.02 B.

    Furthermore, the new German TD line is nearly a balancing failure. While the Nashorn or Rheinmetall Waffenträger are more or less fine, the Pz.Sfl. V (Sturer Emil) is utter crap, whereas the WT E-100 is borderline OP.

    does new stealseries kb + m will run on a single Core also? it’s important for performance like in WoT and when i play Wot i have like 7 cores available.

  13. They better limit how much gold ammo you can carry in historical battles or if they wont then they just cant balance anything even lower tier tanks will kill most heavily armored tanks head on.

    • Historically there was a limit from historical ammo data.

      Although the data I have for the Germans only covers 1941-42. Soemthing like 8.1% of 3.7cm rounds in Russia used by the German were tungsten cored. % drops when you go to the 5cm round. No data atm for 7,5 and 8,8. But normal AP and HE (almost 50/50 mix depending upon the tank) was carried all the time.

      For US shells I have roughly 1943-45. But to be honest T62 shells didn’t become available at all until august. And not in any large numbers until November. And not even in reasonable numbers (per tank) until January 1945.

    • I know that APCR and HEAT is historical and I have nothing against it, but it should be limited like irl about 10-15%. So people would actually think before they start shooting gold rounds. If they wont then we all know what will hapen with KV-1 in tier 5 battle or Tiger 2 in tier 8 battle they will end up being gold ammo suckers.

    If that happens without any optimisations we’re oficially fucked…WoWP runs 2 times slower than WoT for me, on the same settings…And I don’t have the grandpa’s PC, got a decent one.

    Seriously? WoWp engine is extacly same old crap with support for 2 cores… Yay for 5 FPS gaming despite having maschine 2 times better than required!
