Nerf My Tank! Vickers Mk. E Type B

In the previous “Nerf My Tank”, I discovered the horrible truth about Russian Bias in World of Tanks. Today, we will learn about the slightly less horrible secret of Chinese Bias.

A compendium of what was probably sales pamphlets from 1932 lists the penetration of a number of AT/AA guns that never went anywhere and that we do not care about, aside from one: the 47 mm Vickers gun. Here is how this gun is represented in the game.

vickers

45 mm of penetration at 100 meters? A pretty good number for a gun from the late 1920s. Let’s see if these numbers correspond to reality.

Sadly, the penetration for 100 meters is not listed, but it is estimated from the existing data easily enough. Penetration drops by about 4 mm per 200 meters (less at later ranges, but then again, the decrease isn’t linear). With 30 mm at 300 meters, the penetration is about 34 mm at 100 meters. But wait, what is this, in the game it’s 45 mm, or a whole third higher! Scandalous!

Russian and Chinese bias confirmed, ready your torches and pitchforks!

Is some number wrong or is just me who can’t understand?

      • Kellomies = Troll. Needs to be banned, never has anything useful to say, just bashes everyone.

        • As opposed to *your* absolutely vital contribution to not only the discussions on this blog but the very human civilisation as we know it I presume?
          That’s what I thought.
I would also like to remind you I simply answered the question the man posed; there’s no problem with the numbers, only his understanding of them.

And if the caustic tone gave you the impression that after duly reviewing your Important And Well-Researched Opinion I consider you a whiny moron who deserves no better, you’d be entirely correct.

  2. What about the 40mm pom-pom?

Chinese vs British version, 1.9 aim time vs 2.3, 4.5 vs 4.8 shell dispersion on it verse the Cruiser III. Cruiser I gets the same shell dispersion, but a still higher 2.1 second aim time.

  3. Clearly, the Chinese Fascist backyard workshops created better ammunition than the decadant British imperialist factories!

      • This would originally be Kuomintang or warlord hardware, remember. The Communists ended up with a lot of their (and the Japs’) old toys over time.

          • Where period KMT actually fell on the ideological map (a fair few of the bigwigs were educated in Moscow after all) seems rather debatable and isn’t really important anyway. The Communists doubtless had a bunch of rude names for them (and vice versa ofc) but sadly I’m not familiar enough with Chinese history of the period to know them.

  4. A while ago I decided to take the specs/stats in WOT as “loosely held parameters, subject to change without notice or reason”, and play the game as if it were a pen and paper sim, run by an angry drunk guy who is known for stealing money from the bank in games of monopoly.

    Suddenly it all made sense.
    Bourbon helps.

  5. I suggest you to don’t bother so much about low tiers, everybody knows WG doesn’t give a shit about low tiers, that is why the T18 is still overpowered as fuck and being a TD instead of the SPG it was IRL since how many years now? 2?

    • And why they won’t do anything Province, even if moving the spawns would greatly improve gameplay.

  6. Are you sure you’re talking about the right gun? As there were several guns in that calibre. And that Pamphlet only says “Vickers 47mm” and doesn’t identify it any more than that.

    • Not to mention that it might matter a teeny weeny bit at what angle the target was. Not that it terribly matters, it is not as if WOT is overly concerned with historical values unless it so happens to align with their goals. :P

  7. If this is the 47mm/L18 QF then the 30° penetration is 29mm@120 yd and 25mm @ 500 yd. MV=1600 ft/s.
I don’t know where I came of this info.

  8. Well which 3-pdr did the VAE ship with? Which 3-pdr are thes etests for? In game the 3pdr on the later mediums has pretty much the same stats as the VAE (43 vs 45) and so it was over-buffed long before there was any thought of achinese tree and has nothing to do with omg chinese bias.

  9. Further to the above the late 20s 3-pdr APHE ammunition seems to have had less pen than the late 30s AP/T ammo (not yet available during these tests), probably accounting for the in game differnces between the Medium 1 gun and the later “version” on the VAE, the Medium 2 and the Medium 3. The VAE also used a shorter barrel accounting for the weight advantage but worse accuracy. I sthere really a conspiracy here?
