On lags…

Hello everyone,

there is a lot of information going on around the forums about the EU server lag, but it’s scattered all over the place. I did a little investigation of my own, asked around in Russia – didn’t uncover much, but the following is known:

- it is now confirmed that the EU1 server was moved to Amsterdam
- this movement was not caused by the current issues! It was in the making for quite some time, as indicated by the fact it was done practically instantly, where the physical moving of the EU server would require days of downtime, while Wargaming simply switched to ID
- currently, EU1 is running on something that was previously “EU3″ and was prepared for this move, Russian sever RU3 is running on something that was unofficially designated EU4 (it was also moved from Munich)
- the reason both servers were moved from Munich to Amsterdam is unknown
- apparently, Wargaming servers are not the source of the lag issue, the routing is – a new route via Cogent (SS: whatever that is) was created and is in use. My contact’s words: “I suspect they’ve screwed up the BGP or the balancing on the new route” (I better quote it, I have no idea what that means)
- there is currently a massive DDOS attack going on, based on something called “NTP MONLIST”, Wargaming is not the target specifically, but this attack might be clogging the routes
- at this moment, WG RU in Minsk is directly involved in the situation, there is pretty much a gag order for the WG EU employees about it: even if they know, they aren’t allowed to tell you anything, that hasn’t been officially approved. Which takes time.

8.11 Feedback

Hello everyone,

so, it’s been a few days since the 8.11 update, so let’s have a look at what it brought – I will be specifically referring to the EU servers, but from what I could gather, US servers seem to be plagued by the same issues as well. First, the positives:

- new maps: both Windstorm and Ruinberg on fire are visually beautiful. Windstorm gameplay… well, I actually didn’t get that map a single time on random, so I can’t judge, but from the test server it was nice. I like it.
- FPS increase: overall, my FPS increased – not by much, but every bit helps
- TD nerf… I guess… I mean, I never complained about TD’s being OP before (apart from the WT E-100, which is still pretty ridiculous) in the first place, can’t judge
- new UI features, which are nice, but old habits die hard, so I just retrained all the crews I needed manually, before I realized I can do it with one click only now – useful, but… yea, okay, I am conservative

And, negatives

WG EU: Weekend Fail

Hello everyone,

you know how it is with Wargaming EU: not a weekend without fail! This Valentine weekend was especially ripe with it. Let’s start with the “1 day premium” account, that was awarded ever since Wednesday (before the missions were announced) and many people quite reasonably thought it’s some sort of compensation for the terrible lag fiasco of last weekend and this week. That was not the case, it was a Valentine gift for everyone – because, you know, it’s SO hard to set a mission to start during the actual event time.

Funnily enough, even WG support staff thought that it’s a compensation for the last weekend’s lag.

And the weekend event itself? Well…

valentine

Retraining 50 percent off? Cool, isn’t it? Yea well…

shot_001

No discount for silver retraining. Which would be okay, if it was announced properly!

*sigh*

Russian players have this meme, that can be roughly translated as “Wargaming as usual” – maybe we should start such a meme here too. As usual.

14.2.2014

As you might have noticed, the next EU tier 10 on discount is the Jagdpanzer E-100, not the IS-4 (or E-50M), that was predicted earlier (based on the Russian/SEA pattern). That makes the next tier 10 on discount completely unpredictable from now on :(

- apparently, the RU servers are suffering from the same lag issues as the EU ones (SS: good, that means it’s not EU-specific)
- Panzer IV will be grey even after the HD remodelling
- Storm confirms the leaked Panzer IV model as valid, it’s still in the “old quality” as “the last of the Mohycans” (SS: from 9.0 on models will come in new quality only apparently)
- HD Panzer IV model will not appear in 9.0
- apparently, Wargaming HD models will have more polygons than War Thunder models

As for the lags… I have readers writing me every day to write something about them, but I have absolutely no idea, what to write. I have no idea what might be causing them, everyone keeps saying it’s something “along the way”. In Czech Republic, O2 (probably the biggest internet provider) seems to have issues with it – earlier (months ago), I was playing on the same connection at 20-30 ping. Then it jumped to 70-80 for no reason. Then random packet loss, but it wasn’t gamebreaking. Now, I am playing on both servers on 90-130 ping and tons of packet loss. Not much else I can say about it.

Dance of the Canadian Valentines

Hello everyone,

Yuri Pasholok (no matter what we might think of him personally) posts some pretty interesting stuff occasionally. This time, it’s a couple of photos of the Valentine tanks.

Here, a demonstration of first Valentine VI tanks, created by Canadian Pacific Railway, Angus Shop, Montreal, 17.8.1941

And these are the photos of the Kubinka Valentine II, located outside of the museum under the open sky – and apparently, it’s the only tank of this type, left in Russia. The vehicle is well preserved, including its serial number:

The premium account mess on EU

Hello everyone,

because I recieved two e-mails about this, just to clarify to avoid confusion.

You might have noticed that Wargaming EU decided to give us a free day of premium account during the Valentine event. That’s cool and all that, but it wouldn’t be Wargaming, if they didn’t do it without a fail. You see, they activated the “mission” to get the free day early. All of us who logged in this week (specifically ever since Wednesday) recieved it already.

The thing is, most of the people thought it is a compensation for the disastrous last weekend server behavior. It is not. There has been no compensation for that (and as far as we know, there will not be any), this is the “Valentine Gift” for everyone. Instead of a day of premium, I’d rather hear:

- what went wrong
- how was it fixed
- that it won’t happen next weekend again

If WG staff argues this one day serves as a compensation – no, it isn’t, the Russians got a day of premium as well and they didn’t have server trouble like this.

Or did I miss a post explaining all this?

WG EU 1 moved to Amsterdam

Hello everyone,

according to all the signs (pingplotters etc.), EU1 server was moved from Munich to Amsterdam. Apparently there is a problem with Munich as a whole, because RU3 server, that was situated in Munich, was ALSO moved to Amsterdam (you can imagine how “happy” the Russians with low RU3 ping are about it). The latter is officially confirmed, the EU1 move is not, but it’s almost certain it happened.

This explains by the way why many people wrote on forums and other places that they experienced ping changes on EU1 (including me – earlier, 40-50, now 70-90, not including the lags).

Overlord is asking, what do you think of 8.11? You can leave your opinion here

- national battles as “assault” and “encounter” are not planned
- Storm on MM rules (why battletier 12 was removed): “MM tries to spread the tanks equally through their battletiers. That’s why tier 8′s are waiting in queue for tier 10′s in order to create battles of appropriate battletiers. More free tier 10 tanks means less waiting time for tier 8′s”
- machinegun sound in game will not be changed (SS: some player was complaining it sounds weird in 8.11)
- trollplatoons were not solved earlier, because they were not considered a problem
- when assigning a trollplatoon into the battle, MM tries to compensate it by giving the other team tanks with lower MM weight
- SerB states that the cases, where the MM weight of the team with a trollplatoon is lower than the MM weight of the team without it are rare
- SerB states that regarding the mapmaking department, the staff was supplemented by new people. Only one of the leaders of the department resigned. There were two more mapmakers in it, but not a single map from them made it into the game
- national battles MM rules will not be changed
- Storm states that the problems with uncomfortable camera height in 8.11 are apparently caused by bad mods
- WoT for Xbox passed the 60k player milestone according to Slava Makarov
- IS-3 will be remodelled to HD in 9.1
- no camo changes were made in 8.11 at all
- also, SerB published his new (or old, republished – didn’t check) sci-fi book apparently (yes, Sergei Burkatovsky is actually a well-known Russian sci-fi author for those, who didn’t know and no, his books are not in English unfortunately)

Storm: The British voiceover is a “British actor, who was picked by the people from WG Paris office.”
