when talking about fake tanks in WoT, there is one more category that has to be remembered: vehicles, that were not fakes and existed (at least in blueprints), but everyone thinks for some reason that they did actually not exist. There is an entire number of this vehicles and today, we are going to focus on them.
One of the most notorious cases of “no way that existed” is the KV-122. Specifically, the KV-1S with an enlarged turret (KV-85) and the 122mm D-25 gun. I mean – it’s way too overpowered, it has to be a fake! Sorry, that one actually really existed:
The D-2-5 gun in the game is – as far as I remember – a somewhat re-worked version of the D-25T with the same ballistic properties, only made to fit the IS (KV-85) turret by having a different breech I think. But yes, it existed. Want to hear something even more ridiculous? Some Soviet reports mention an attempt to put the BL-9 on KV chassis. That would be just amazing.
It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these! Here’s a link to the previous edition.
Q: I found these on EnglishRussia, and there is a KV-2 turret on the IS chassis. Can you tell me more about this?
A: It is a movie prop, and one of dubious quality at that. If you look further, you can see “KV-1″ tanks that won’t fool even a casual observer. For instance, their guns are clearly immobile.
Q: Is there some pattern to gun calibers? Several nations seem to use the same ones, 20 mm, 37 mm, 75/76 mm, 105 mm, etc.
A: A lot of gun calibers are in multiples of inches. 37 mm is about 1.5 inches, 76 mm (76.2 mm) is 3 inches, 152 (152.4 mm) is 6 inches. Doubling your shell’s diameter has an easy to calculate effect on its vital properties, such as weight. This lets an engineer get close to the desired performance, in theory. Of course, as he starts fine-tuning the performance, the diameter will change, so it won’t be exactly the multiple of an inch anymore. As modelling methods improved, the need to take old shells as reference ended, and modern shell designers don’t have to start with multiples of an old thing. Drastically different modern ammunition design doesn’t help either.
- after independent suspension introduction, nothing will change for the aiming or gun stabilization, the change will be visual only
- the fact Chi-Ha is a light tank in the Chinese tree and medium in the Japanese tree is caused by the fact that both armies classified it differently historically (the Japanese Chi-Ha doesn’t have the LT camo bonus though)
- Q: “UEFA thinks Israel is in Europe and therefore Israeli tanks should be in EU tree” A: “Unfortunately, we have no agreements with UEFA”
- there is no “shooting and dying at the same time” in World of Tanks. One of these events happens always earlier, this is not a bug and it won’t be changed
- there is no corellation between the introduction of the HD client and new engine sounds (SS: new engine sounds will come actually, but it doesn’t depend on the HD client)
- it’s possible that dirt (mud) will make your tank dirty in battle as you go through it
- it’s possible tracks will “slip” (SS: when the vehicle traction is not enough) in the future
- changes in JT88? “If we change something, we’ll tell”
- fire and ammo rack explosion does influence income in battle: both do damage to modules and damage to modules counts towards your credit gain
- when balancing the income of a vehicle, “net” income (SS: income after deducting shell and repair costs) is taken into account – furthermore, the use of gold shells is taken into account also (SS: that means that the fact you will have little net income if you spam gold shells is not taken into account)
- when asked what is better XP gain-wise, to shoot an enemy for full damage, or to finish off one enemy who has low hitpoints for less damage but killing him, SerB answers that mostly it’s better to finish off that one enemy with low hitpoints, removing one shooting gun from the enemy team – by that you increase your chance of victory more and the average recieved reward from battle rises
- for now, SerB expects the HD content to be separate from the regular client
- apparently, bamboo patch (on Pearl River map) has no real foliage, therefore it provides no camo bonus
this one’s on me actually – I made a pretty stupid mistake in the “Wargaming fake tanks” article and I would like to rectify it. I wrote in that article that the Jagdtiger with 128mm L/61 is a fake, because the gun was fitted in an enlarged superstructure and wouldn’t fit the regular casemate. That is not the truth – I made a mistake by confusing the 128mm L/61 and L/66. Here’s the deal.
This is the regular Jagdtiger with its original 128mm L/55 gun (not counting the 88m L/71 variant):
Sometimes however, you hear about “Porsche Jagdtiger” – this was not some different proposal by Ferdinand Porsche however, it simply was a regular Jagdtiger with experimentally mounted Porsche suspension. This is how it looked (source: Spielberger):
The Porsche suspension for the Jagdtiger was an effort to reduce the man-hours, needed to actually build a Jagdtiger. According to Spielberger, ten vehicles were fitted with this suspension and successfully tested. The goal of reducing the price and man-hours was reached: the classic Henschel suspension costed 866.000,- RM and it took 360 man-hours to prepare the hull for it. The Porsche system costed 462.000,- RM, it took only 140 man-hours to complete and it was lighter too. The results of this project were satisfactory and it’s possible that in the future, more Jagdtigers would be fitted with the Porsche system, but the end of the war prevented that. Other than the suspension however, there was no difference between “Henschel Jagdtiger” and “Porsche Jagdtiger”
Either way, the 128mm L/61 gun was never intended for the Jagdtiger, so that setup in game is fictional (I was right). I was wrong however with the casemate part, because I thought it was intended for the L/61. There was a project to arm the Jagdtiger with a 128mm L/66 gun that looked like this:
This was proposed by Krupp in November 1944, the project was refused in January 1945 as unrealistic. Basically, the gun would use the same mount as the L/55 variant, only it could not be mounted as such – it would have to be retracted before moving the vehicle, because it was too long and the Jagdtiger wouldn’t be able to move with it sticking out like that. Therefore, before moving the vehicle, it would have to be moved backwards and – vice versa – it would take time to prepare the vehicle for firing, because it would have to stop and then the crew would have to shift the gun forwards, negating Jagdtiger’s advantage as a tank destroyer – Wa Prüf 6 in fact reclassified such a vehicle as heavy artillery. It’s worth noting that even this long gun kept decent traverse (10 degrees to each side).
So, in short:
- Porsche Jagdtiger – only suspension is different
- 128mm L/61 Jagdtiger is fake
- 128mm L/66 Jagdtiger existed (see above)
what, you thought Wargaming EU would get better with the amount of fails in 2014? Oh come on, you, you should know better :) Our batch of fail for today comes from the German community.
The Teleportation contest (which is common for all the language sections as far as I remember) had incorrect rules in German: instead of making pictures with one tank OR an airplane, the German contest said “AND”, so basically until today morning, all the German submissions were invalid. No rewards for you, Germans!
Another German competition was a huge fail too. The players were asked to submit their replays or something – only, the submitting did not work and the competition got cancelled as a result yesterday. Apparently the competition prize pool was “saved”, so players will have a chance to win a double prize next time.
