Clantalk: Inteview with Storm

Source: http://www.clantalk.net/t/very-interesting-interview-with-storm-about-wot-in-2014/16309

Hello everyone,

Clantalk portal translated some parts of the recent interview with Storm by Russian videomaker and streamer Jove. Special thanks to Daigensui for letting me know about it. Here it is.

Translation of video from discussion with Storm (by Jove) – (paraphrased from Russian by ClanTalk.net):

Q at 00:53. Patch 0.8.0 was really nice, why were the patches after that underwhelming.

A. There were a lot of work in progress about better graphics, and models, and this work isn’t fully finished thus cannot be rolled into the patches. Perhaps we should have been more active in communicating what we are working on for players.

Q at 1:45. Are you happy with the SPG nerf, did you achieve what you wanted?

A. We cannot look at emotions, we have to look at stats. At top tiers there are 2 SPG per game, which is appropriate. At lower levels there are less, so we will gradually buff mid- and low-tier SPGs until there are more.

- SerB is not active on WoWp forums – he has no time for 2 forums – but in time he might move there
- captured Soviet Panzer IV (T-4) will most likely have the L/48 gun
- in time the same clans that exist in WoT will be enabled (ported into) WoWp
- clans will be unified in all 3 WG games
- Rheinmetall Waffenträger drowning too easily? “How terrible…”
- (connected with the WoWp and WoT clans unification), maxmimum amount of people in clans will be increased, but the amount of tokens for CWs will remain the same – this increase is to allow clans to recruit WoWp players
- Captured tanks will not work as premium tanks: theoretically, a captured tank could be equal to a regular elite tank of its tier in quality (doesn’t have to be weaker like a premium tank), but in case of T-4, it will most likely not have Panzer IV’s top engine

There is a MM rule: “Vehicles are put into teams based on collected team statistics in last half hour” – a developer explains what it means – basically, MM works so that it watches “typical” setups in last half an hour (for example, that there are usually 3 heavies in almost every fight) and when there is such a trend, MM will “prepare in advance” 3 heavy tank slots and fill them outside of the queue, which improves the MM speed.

This mechanism is used during arty hardcaps calculations: when using the “5 arty” hardcap (if there are enough arties, there used to be plenty before), extra arty is moved into the secondary queue, where it can stay for a long time. This happened when there were too man arties, now it is not actual anymore.

IS-7 upgrade: “Mega-gun for a mega-tank”

Source: Yuri Pasholok’s blog
Author: Yuri Pasholok

Recently, Yuri Pasholok found a proposal for a very interesting IS-7 variant. What he writes in his posts is this:

IS-7 (Object 260) is one of the peaks of Soviet tank development of the late 40′s. Along with that, Object 260 was not alone. While NII-100 (SS: Soviet technology research institute No.100) was working on its project, in Chelyabinsk a new generation heavy tank was developed – the Object 705. The vehicle was supposed to have roughly the same characteristics as Object 260, but the tank design (arrangement) was different. On paper (in the project) the tank was supposed to have the 122mm BL-13 gun, but unlike Object 260, it was supposed to have the turret in the rear. This vehicle (Object 705) requires more serious research, but it’s possible to see how the vehicle would look like.

Does WG EU ever do anything right?!

What, you expected a nice juicy fail, or another rant? :) Sorry! The answer to the question is “yes”. They manage to do things right too.

What I liked lately – three things in fact:

First:

Several people sent me a message (even forum PM) about the latest event fail, where the description for US and EU got mixed up and EU advertised things like equipment discount and profit bonus for all the vehicles, when in fact this was meant for US server, which (to balance it) came short last week. Yes, it got mixed up, but Wargaming fixed that very quickly – in fact it was like 10 or 20 minutes before it was corrected. Plus, it was no stealth change, it was announced by Ectar, who admitted mistake. Everyone makes mistakes, fixing them fast and admitting them is the key (unlike the usual “lolstealthchanges” way).

Second:

Tuccy’s historical posts. Remember Hunter1911′s post about KV-1? It wasn’t perfect, but Hunter was man enough to correct his post based on discussion feedback. That is good. What is however even better are Tuccy’s historical posts in the same thread. Why that guy’s time is wasted in community department when he could write historical posts and research tanks for the game, I have no idea. Or maybe he does that and I don’t know. Hm. Will have to ask. But either way: let me be clear with you: I think Tuccy is one of the most educated people I’ve ever had a contact with when it comes to armor. There are maybe 2-3 other people on both US and EU forums combined who can match his knowledge. I wish there were more historical articles from him.

Third:

The interns program. I think that for those kids it was a dream come true – and that’s a really good thing. I appreciate that.

I also like the “Rhino” competition format. Such “daily” format is pretty useful… if it worked properly.

What I have mixed feelings about: Official WG EU QA is open again. Come on guys, you know FTR QA is better. For starters, it’s weekly, not once per month. But – what I find even more important – is the fact I am trying to tell you why I won’t pick your answer.

Speaking of FTR upgrades: From next FTR QA session (if the Russian developers continue to support FTR and there actually IS a next sessio – no, I don’t take it for granted), I will be much more thorough answer program. That means I will be either picking a question you post, or answering it (telling you WHY I didn’t pick it). I will reserve an entire evening for that. Should help a bit.

How to become a Noob (new video)

Hello everyone,

another video from the “How to become a noob” series :) This REALLY should have English subtitles (translation provided below). It’s really funny in Russian though.

Scene 1: “Brother”

Enemy KV-1S got into hopeless situation.
Allied Hellcat really wants to take the shot, but team KV-1S doesn’t want to tank.
The dude got greedy… but what’s the difference, there are so many allied tanks left
The KV-1S however decides not to attack the enemy. Another person desiring the Invader medal?
Allies fall one after another to the enemy D25
Maybe go kill him? Nooo! We want medal!
Oh well, the base is almost captured. Victory!
But why!!!?
Did he also decide to finish the KV-1S off?
Or…
This is where the dog is buried…
A cuckoo (“a stranger amongst his people”)
Allied arty sensed there is a traitor in their midst
But too late

Possible high tier light replacement: Panzer-Aufklaerer auf E-25

Disclaimer: this is an highly speculative article which tries to find a logical link to a tank design between secondary sources. The following has to be taken as author’s interpretation.

Late war Germany found itself lacking capable light recon tanks amongst its many shortages. There were a few obsolete light tanks pressed into the role but by 1945 they were mostly worn out, with the few working remains hopelessly outmatched by Soviet and Allied fast medium tanks. One answer to this was the usual flurry of paper projects, which however proved to be too complex and expensive (VK 16.02), using precious chassis and making little sense (Recon Panther) or being underpowered from inception for the role (early turreted Jagdpanzer 38 (t) with Panzer IV turret and to a lesser extent the Panzer 38D). Spielberger briefly mentions that the E-25 proposal included a recon tank version but gives no further details, leaving us still into obscurity. There is however one further, unlikely source that might bring us further details, although usually regarded as something very different altogether: Hahn’s “Klein-Tiger”.

The project as described by Hahn might seem a fantasy nonsense and indeed it doesn’t seem to match anything Tiger related, as very well described in this article. That is, as long as we consider the Klein-Tiger as a Tiger related project, however what if it was something entirely different in design and purpose?

- SerB states that the S-70 gun could fit into IS-4 turret, but was not mounted in it in real life
- the IS-4 on tier 9 had the S-70 gun earlier (SS: as far as I remember, it was removed when IS-4 became tier 10), despite not being historical, it was there because “it was necessery”
- Chinese 59-16 light tank in game was based not only on drawings, there is allegedly a mock-up photo too
- WZ-131 85mm gun with “funny” muzzle brake: according to SerB this design was borrowed from the Americans

This is how it looks:
