On complicated armor models

Hello everyone,

this is just a line of thinking about why World of Tanks armor, War Thunder damage model and all the things that these games have in common and all the things they are different in. Please note that this is my personal opinion, that I am not only not forcing on you, I fully admit I could be wrong – up to you, whether you agree with me or not.

First and foremost, no matter how much ANY producer brags about realism or historicity (some stuff in War Thunder German tree still makes me chuckle, but then again, Waffenträger E-100 is a complete fake), both World of Tanks and War Thunder are arcade games. From that title alone it is relatively pointless to talk about some realism, when you watch the vehicles from 3rd person and have literally a sniper mode in both games. And that’s fine – they are games after all, meant for as wide audience as possible. This however means one thing: in this case, too much realism doesn’t help, it hurts.

As you might have noticed, War Thunder developer Gaijin recently released two posts about the War Thunder tanks armor model. The articles are available here (part 1) and here (part 2). The only notice I’d have here is this: the translation into English is shit and I had to switch to Russian two times to figure out what exactly is meant. Please, Gaijin, next time you publish stuff in English, don’t act like Wargaming EU and don’t use google translate.

A Christmas Gift for Silentstalker

Hello everyone,

just to let you know, I got banned for 30 days on forums on my Erenjager account, so I will continue to discuss stuff on forums using some other alt, or simply won’t. What is weird is the reason I recieved it for:

idahou

Basically, I said (regarding the WGNY2014): “Hmm, do you have warplanes? If yes and it gives something for WoWp, lots of players will be pissed off :)” – apparenty, “pissed off” is a terrible vulgar word worthy of 30 days of chatban.

And yes, I am sure there is one rule or another for this to be “legal”, I just think it is weird. It’s not a language thing either (the banning mod, Idahou, is Czech). However, it is not surprising that Idahou is the last of the “friends of Wargaming” from over a year ago…

How terrible :)

“Buff my tank!” – Panzer I series

Hello and welcome to “Buff my tank!

The “Buff my tank!” articles are meant as an historical way to look at some tanks considered underpowered in game and ways to improve their combat abilities discussed by the original German engineers.
Beware that while being sometimes ironic in tone, the article treats about both costs and benefits of every choice and it most likely will never be listened by WG as suggestion.

Often forgotten and underestimated in the shadow of its mightier successors, the humble Panzer I was mainly meant to be a training tank but ended up being a pretty important part of the early Polish and French blitzkrieg campaigns.

Storm is asking about bad MM in 8.10

Source: http://world-of-kwg.livejournal.com/266990.html

Hello everyone,

apparently, a problem came up with 8.10 MM, because Storm is asking, whether the Russian players had some bad MM setups lately (he mentions cases where one side for example has 3 tier 10 heavies and the other has 6). The newer the better and the more disbalance gets reported, the faster a solution will be found. This applies ONLY for patch 8.10.

From the discussion:

- the fact tier 10 arty sometimes gets balanced against tier 10 heavies is considered normal according to Storm
- developers do like patch 8.10
- there have been no (SS: intended) changes in MM in patch 8.10

And what about you? Have you run into weird MM cases in 8.10? Post them, including a screenshot (please, ONE link (any link) per comment, posts with more than one link get withheld in the spam queue and I won’t approve until I see it there, which might sometimes be with significant delay).

GW Tiger with 305mm and 420mm mortar

Hello everyone,

this is something that came up in connection with looking for the upcoming tier 8 of the Sturmtiger branch. Walter Spielberger in his book “Tiger und seine Abarten” (Tiger and its variants) mentions two interesting projects: the 305mm and 420mm GW Tiger (page 177 of the German issue, in case you are interested). Both were supposed to be built on a chassis, using the Tiger tank elements and utilizing 305mm and 420mm Škoda mortars. Not sure why the 305mm project was not selected over the (fake) GW-E100, perhaps it was the fear of power creep? Anyway…

Czechoslovak Škoda was before the war known as the producer of possibly the best artillery in the world and this role has not changed during the war under German occupation. Several projects were prepared in Škoda (including a native-built 128mm cannon, of which little is known IIRC), including two superheavy mortar projects, the 420mm Mörser and the 305mm B20. The B-series designation of the 420mm project is not known (B series weapons was a product line of Škoda of heavy mortars), German designation was Gerät 3-4203.
