French Armor in Indochina – Part I

Hello everyone,

there were several conflicts all across the world, eclipsed (if not technically a part of or a continuation of) by the World War 2 and one of them was the fall of the French colonial dominion in Indochina. The French did have some armor on the spot as well, so let’s have a look at how the French-owned (but mostly American) tanks were doing in the jungly environment.

The first French armor to arrive in Indochina were five Renault FT tanks in January 1919, belonging to 16 Bataillon de Chars Légers (16th Light Vehicle Batallion), commanded by Captain de Cuverville. First trials were succesful and showed that the tanks could be very useful in colonies – and so, their number quickly rose to 30. By 1928, there was already a company of tanks present in Indochina, supported by armored cars, such as White Mle 1918, AM White-Laffly and Peugeot Mle 1925. These were used mostly for “muscle flexing” and “sabre rattling” in various areas, where they were transported mostly by ships.

Engines of War 2014 Photos

Hello everyone,

Russian World of Tanks portal showed a few interesting photos from the Engines of War 2014 (Моторы войны — 2014) military meeting, exhibition and re-enactment spot, that took place last weekend near the village of Ivanovo. Check this out:

A flamethrower version of the T-34 medium tank. This is the rare tank Yuri Pasholok fell from by the way :) I doubt there are more than like three in the world.

Christie in Action

Hello everyone,

the following video was linked on Yuri Pasholok’s blog and I think it’s actually very, very interesting.

The tank you see on it is the Christie M1931. You might remember the name of Walter Christie as the father of the fast BT Soviet tanks and ultimately predecessors to the legendary T-34, which uses a Christie suspension (to be fair, there was a plan to replace the Christie suspension with torsion bars, but the war intervened and nothing came of it).

Christie was known for building not really heavily armored tanks, these were more like race cars with guns and turrets. M1931 Christie tank was for its 10,5 tons powered by a 338hp Liberty engine (32 hp/t!), allowing it to go as fast as 74 km/h on tracks and 113 km/h on wheels (the design could drive around on rubber tyres to speed up the transportation on the road). This however was compensated by very thin armor (16mm at the most) and a short 37mm gun.

In the end, the US Army was interested in heavy, “infantry support” tanks and did not want Christie’s invention. Soviet Union however bought two of these tanks and used them as patterns for the creation of the BT series.

25.6.2014

Nothing much today either. Well, actually, two things.

First, Crytek denied financial issues (and, hence, being taken over by Wargaming). Too bad for us I guess.

Second, ASIA forum now has a “developer Q&A”. Well, sort of. It’s led by Tanitha, who is an ASIA server producer. The section can be found here, but if you don’t want to read it, you don’t have to, I’ll be including it in daily QA.

From the answers today:

- Havoc is not scheduled for 9.2
- Havoc was originally scheduled for 9.0, keeps getting postponed
- currently Havoc ETA is not known (“Exactly what update it will arrive in depends on how quickly the final pieces get put together”)

If you have an account on ASIA server, you can post your questions there as well.

Straight Outta Supertest: Malinovka Changed

Source: VK Wotleaks community

Hello everyone, so, it seems that the earlier information about Malinovka changes was confirmed by another source. The lower base had the buildings apparently removed, but the base recieved some cover (of unknown type for now, possibly stones and such) the way the northern base has it.

New Fury Official Trailer

Fury is a movie about a crew of a Sherman tank fighting in Germany, that is coming on November 14th, 2014. It’s supposed to be quite realistic – for starters, it has a real Tiger 1 tank in it – how many movies can say the same? Yup, it’s the famous Bovington Tiger, actually captured in Tunisia. Just think about it for a second – a movie with a tank that actually really fired at the Allies in anger, in 2014 – this was not too uncommon right after the war (some Russian, even Czechoslovak movies were made using the authentic German equipment), but now, it’s quite extraordinary.

Sadly, the more I learn about the movie, the more I just can’t seem to actually like it. For one, I hate Brad Pitt – but that’s my personal thing. It’s more like the setting, I am quite afraid of the traditional “dumb evul Germunz vs stronkerest US Superheroes” setting (Red Tails, anyone? Of course the only purpose of that movie was to show that black people fought too, not historical realism, but even so). Even if realistic, I am still worried a bit about the setting, because by 1945 the German army was practically defeated (especially after the Ardennes), so making a movie about American tank crew shooting up “boys and old men” (as one of the real life American commanders characterized his fighting in Germany) in their tank doesn’t sound too well. But we’ll have to see.

Secondly, there is the sorry state the Sherman was left in after the shooting of the movie. While I doubt we will ever learn the truth about the contract between Hollywood and Bovington, having the people who made this movie run down the Sherman so much that the proceedings from cooperation with Wargaming have to fund its restoration instead of actually bringing money to the museum in order to restore other vehicles is appalling and sad.

Oh well, I’ll go see it in cinema nonetheless.

Public Service Announcement – WN8 Needs Help, so does New Czech Blog

Hello everyone,

two people asked me for help yesterday in their projects and considering I know both well, I accepted, so here’s the thing. First one is carramba66 – you might remember him from the veteran charity, he organized it. Now, he’s starting a Czech blog (sort of like a mutation of FTR along with original content) and needs help of more people with it. Here’s what he asked me to post (in Czech of course):
