Soviet PzIIIs and Derivatives

No version of the Soviet tech tree features a captured PzIII (or T-3, as Soviet documentation called it). However, a number of vehicles are based on it: the SG-122, SU-85I, and the somewhat recently announced SU-76I. Let’s take a look at these vehicles and the vehicles they were based on from the Soviet point of view.

Unlike the lukewarm reception of the Panther, the PzIII was very interesting to the Red Army. An early modification of the tank was received after the Polish campaign as a part of a deal with Germany. The 37 mm gun was laughable by standards of the time, but Soviet military minds and engineers appreciated many features from the vehicle: its commander’s cupola, torsion bars, shock absorbers. Various components of the T-50 light tank were inspired by these features.

After the Wehrmacht poured over the borders of the USSR, the Red Army captured a number of new and improved PzIIIs, with modern 50 mm guns. This new vehicle was tested extensively. The results of the testing showed that while the tank wasn’t as fast as the Soviets’ own T-34, and the gun not as powerful, it was still a very good vehicle, worthy of the Red Army’s attention. You may recall that the flamethrower modification of the PzIII alone earned more pages devoted to it in Soviet technical reports than the Panther.

Veider answers on stream

Source: http://world-of-ru.livejournal.com/2863712.html

Hello everyone,

Veider (one of the developers) was a stream guest yet again along with Kirill Oreshkin (the chief of WG movie department), here’s what they wrote on the forums (the summary was made by maiorboltach, LJ forums):

- while historical battles will be mostly 15vs15, it is possible that there will be some cases where it is impossible to balance it correctly historically that way, so there might for example be 15vs12 clashes as well
- currently, developers are working on historical battles balance
- the weight of ammo carried will not be taken into account in the future, as compared to the weight of the tank it makes no difference
- KV-5 is doing fine both statistically and farm-wise
- apparently the “free IS-6″ event is confirmed, there will be a video on that in a few days
- there will be changes in FV4202, but not anytime soon – the changes will be “cool” though
- T57 nerf is not planned for now
- there will be LT changes in order to make LT’s more “action-oriented”, but not very soon. Developers do have a lot of plans in mind though. Developers want to make the LT class “self-sufficient”. They identify the LT problems as low vitality (survivability) and slow moving across the map because of the physics
- T-50-2 will definitely not return

Object 430 size to change

Hello everyone,

about an hour ago, in the QA from 14.12.2013, I posted:

- the size of Object 140 and 430 is correct according to Storm

However, that is not the case. The post above was translated from Storm’s answer, that was obsolete – I was corrected by Russian player (“suck_my_nya” or “lusty_argonian_maid”, whichever you prefer), who linked me this post (thanks, mate :)). Storm is saying the following:

“We doublechecked. We found production drawings with dimensions in them and checked according to them. There is a discrepancy in height (cca 14cm – all the known height numbers were referring to the height of the turret and not the height with commander’s copula and optics) and in width (the tank turned up to be 8cm wider than necessery, the known numbers about the width are a bit wrong, according to the production drawing, the width is 3120mm).

We will fix it in the next patch or the patch after that (right now the schedule is full).

But when we change it, there is no need for tears like now in the Ferdinand thread.”

So, there you have it. It will be 8cm narrower and 14cm taller. Not much of a difference, but still. There are other vehicles with incorrect dimensions in the game, let’s hope they will also be fixed in time.

14.12.2013

- HESH changes? “If there are any changes planned, we will tell”
- the size of Object 140 and 430 is correct according to Storm
- when asked, whether the visibility (spotting, render) distance will increase, Storm answers: “The real question is – do we need to see on 1000m and more? That’s a already a completely different game with shooting at pixels.”
- currently, the render distance (what you see when someone else spots for you) is a square, WG is however already developing turning it into a 700m radius circle.
- it’s possible the 112 frontal armor has some sort of graphic bug, it will be apparently corrected

That’s from the regular sources, but there’s more coming…

Stream with The_Chieftain (…and my cameo)

Hello everyone,

here is last night’s stream with The_Chieftain. The beginning was plagued a bit by technical problems, Apart from the stream being actually pretty educational (Chieftain talks about things like why the M10 was in fact not called the Wolverine), Chief is actually not a bad player. Furthermore, around 30th minute, Chieftain decided to try out the roaming mechanism and transferred to EU2 – and asked me for a platoon.

It was a bit awkward, because I was watching the stream, that was for whatever reason delayed by like 3 minutes (and in low res no less, Twitch is messy), so by the time I saw what he was doing, it was already 3 mins ago of his time. Anyway, I had a short cameo, we played two platoon battles together where I was totally hopeless and then he returned back to US server. Apparently, the ingame voice chat doesn’t work while roaming by the way.
