in 30 minutes (18:00 CEST), an “ask me anything” session should commence on Reddit. You will be able to ask WG staff questions about the game. I will later make a summary of what was answered there.
This time, it’s however interesting, since one of the people answering will be Anton “Evilly” Pankov, the Chief of RU community. The thread is not yet open, it will appear apparently only after the session starts.
annoyed by the new 9.0 hangar and the fact that it puts more strain on the graphic card than the battle itself in some cases? Well, fear not, a solution exists:
Old garage mod. The lighting is a bit off (kinda ugly), but there is a significant decrease in load and increase in FPS. Thanks to Saša Dordevski for linking it to me.
Disclaimer: Obviously, this post is not about tanks, feel free to ignore it, if you aren’t interested in this sorta thing
Hello everyone,
as you have probably heard, Elder Scrolls Online (furthermore referred to as ESO) is a new MMO, based on the massive Elder Scrolls world, which is one of the most developed and largest fantasy franchises out there, with very deep lore and rich content. The best known part of the Elder Scrolls series is the legendary game Skyrim, widely considered to be one of the best games ever made.
As I wrote several times, I am a World of Warcraft veteran and am familiar with the MMORPG concepts (phasing, aggro etc. – more on that later) – I am saying this so you understand, how I approached this game, because most people seem to approach it wrong. I didn’t specifically follow the game development and only got interested after the game was released and Rita started streaming it once or twice. That caught my attention, so I bought it and installed it.
Considering today’s game prices, the game doesn’t come cheap: 50 Euro (70 for special edition) and then you have to pay subscription (cca 10 Euro per month). That is a mixed blessing – of course, you have to pay, the game is not F2P. But on the other hand, this system acts as a “natural barrier” to keep the worst pubbies, noobs and idiots out and prevents the infestation of stupidity, so present in World of Tanks. I actually prefer it this way and the players I met in the game proved me right.
After smooth purchase of the game online and a 20GB download (not as bad as I thought), I installed it and ran it. Well… this is the part where I need to say something a lot of people writing reviews on this game seem not to understand.
ESO is NOT Skyrim
I think that I don’t have to tell anyone that single-player and multi-player requirements are (still) on a completely different level. For one, ESO is missing most of the really pretty physics, that made Skyrim great – no archery physics for example. In fact, mechanics and gameplay-wise, ESO is actually closer to World of Warcraft than Skyrim and it uses a LOT of WoW mechanics. WoW players will feel quite at home after a while, although there are definitely some improvements as well.
apparently, patch 9.0 brought also some nice new hangars. Thanks to Russian LJ user Awasaky, we can have a look at them (…because one hangar heating up your GPU is not enough).
26th of April Hangar (2 years of SEA server?), it can be downloaded here
I am not sure about this, but if I recall correctly, Cromwells of various types, originally from the British forces in Africa, were captured by the Israelis from the Egyptians, who used them.
several people actually recently sent me a link to an article, that has nothing per se to do with World of Tanks – it’s about War Thunder (yes, I still have the game on my hard drive and no, I haven’t touched it yet, gotta check the schedule, when there’s the closest GF test and have a look).
War Thunder released a patch, where it is possible to easily customize the game, according to player’s needs. If I understand correctly, the skins are client-side (like in World of Tanks), so only you can see them, but whoever was making the video about it mentioned that the developers would like to have them server-side.
Another cool function is that you can actually create your own maps and missions. So far they can be only shared with friends, but check this out:
A sad story, this is – in St.Petersburg, a 17 year old Alexander S. jumped out of a 4th floor window, ending in hospital with serious injuries, after losing in a computer game World of Tanks. During this incident, his grandmother was present in the appartment.
According the words of his grandmother, the teenager got angry, started destroying the PC screen, then he ran into the kitchen and then he jumped out of the window. According to the district authorities, an investigation was opened under the Article 110 of the Russian Penal Code: “Incitement to suicide”. His girlfriend wrote on social network that he played a lot of World of Tanks and often raged online. The teenager also had real life issues, he was recently expelled from school and possibly had problems with his step-father.
Well guys, whenever someone tells you in chat to go kill yourselves…. don’t take it literally.
Regarding various FPS/bug fixed. Patch 9.0 added new sub-folder into the “world_of_tanks/res” folder, it’s called “awesomium”. No, this is not a joke, it really is there – no idea what it does, it’s some middleware. Now, here’s a thing. Some players reported that deleting this folder (or moving it somewhere else) from the client reported the game to load faster and run on more FPS. I tried it, it had no effect on me, but the game is still running – so, use it at your own peril.
- apparently there is a bug, where damage, prevented by the mantlet does not count towards “damage, blocked by armor” – this is a bug
- related to the above: Storm confirms that damage blocked by spaced armor doesn’t get taken in account, it will be fixed
today, we are going to talk about another two major candidates for the European tree. In case you are seeing this post series for the first time or don’t even know what the EU tree concept is, please read part 1 of the series. Part 2 deals with Italy and Czechoslovakia and today, we are going to talk about Hungary.
Hungary
As one of the very few possible EU branches, Hungary tanks are actually well researched and generally known. The branch itself is quite limited: Hungarians have enough medium (heavy) tanks and tank destroyers to reach tier 7, but practically nothing above that tier. Normally, that would be a serious problem, but the Hungarian significance lies in two things:
- Hungarian tanks are historically important: most actually fought in the war and went through some tough battles on the eastern front
- the tanks themselves (although drawing from Czechoslovak, German and Swedish design schools) are quite distinctive and unique, no other nation used them and there are no copies in this tree, unless you start thinking about making it all to tier 10
For this part, I will be using the work of Károly “Karika” Németh – you might recognize that name from various For the Record articles, written based on Hungarian sources and therefore as close to historicity as it gets. Karika imagines the Hungarian tree (or at least branches) as such:
it’s probably not widely known, but SEA (how the hell is that server called now? SEA? ASIA? WG East? WG Asia?) has this running program, where various authors make drawings/paintings of Japanese tanks and someone (WG “expert” or whatnot) makes a write-up of that tank’s specific history. That alone is not interesting, but the drawings are pretty. Check this out (by clicking on the tank name, you’ll get to the original article with tank description):
