Spherical Tanks

About two months ago, Wargaming put out a fake news post on spherical tanks: the ShT-1A and ShT-2T. They went as far as making a fake historical article on them, as well as fake wiki pages. Apparently, people will believe anything, since I’m still seeing Google searches for those tanks.

However, spherical tanks are very much real. During my last Q&A, interest was shown in them. Here are a bunch of spherical and rolling tanks that were actually designed, and some even built!

Additionally, Yuri Pasholok, Wargaming’s historian, is working on a book about Soviet spherical tanks, titled “Stalin’s Steel Balls”. Keep an eye out for that one.

WG EU fail: Quasar edition

So, once again, WG EU dropped the ball.

For those, who don’t know him, Quasar is the EU server “developer/producer”, who occasionally posts some answers to some questions. Nothing wrong with that, the problem is, he occasionally posts bullshit.

Some of you might remember that some time ago, Quasar posted that Panzer 58 and other Swiss tanks won’t be implemented, while the Russian developers said they would. What I did was I asked Edrard (the wot-news guy), who relayed this question to Veider (RU forums developer), who confirmed they have a high chance of coming in the EU tree. Quasar later backedited the post.

Well, Quasar did it again:

67. Was the idea of the female crew completely abandoned?
Not at all, but it has a very low priority for the moment.

65. Any update regarding more options for customizing the exterior of our tanks?
Also at this moment in time, we are also working on projects of the rings for the gun barrels:

Edit: a screenie, because at some point it will probably get backedited, as it did in the Panzer 58 case.

quasar

These are his answers. Those, who follow my RU translation know both of these options were denied specifically by SerB and Storm, that’s why I went and asked Russian developer Vallter directly (this post is made with his knowledge). To quote him:

“No, they will most probably not happen”

If you don’t believe me, Vallter has a blog, you can doublecheck the answers there. In other words, Quasar is pulling answers out of his ass, without checking with Minsk central. Makes you wonder, what good is such Q&A for and what ELSE is wrong…

(Special thanks to Vallter for indulging my incessant questions)

Super Pershing penetration buff? A misunderstanding…

Well, folks, I have bad news for you.

Vallter, who yesterday sort-of confirmed the Superpershing penetration buff, just went back on it. Apparently, it’s still being discussed at Wargaming, but we can be reasonably certain some sort of buff will take place, since the vehicle barely reaches the intended 49 percent winrate as it is and a frontal armor nerf could send it plummeting.

To make this absolutely clear: it is possible, that the penetration buff will happen, but not nearly certain.

Super Pershing buff: penetration

Earlier today, developers hinted at the fact that in order to compensate the armor loss for Superpershing, it will also recieve a buff. Now, Vallter (one of the developers on his blog) unofficially confirmed that (possibly amongst other changes), Superpershing will recieve more penetration, around 200mm:

- you hear the sounds not from the spot where your tank is, but where your camera is: that’s why you can’t hear the sound of your own shooting when in arty satellite view, because the camera is high away from your vehicle
- apparently there are differences in additional XP between RU and NA server (NA server gets extra XP for some archievements as parts of some events, RU server doesn’t), SerB doesn’t think it’s a big of a deal (“Experience depends on how you play. You play well, you get experience, you don’t play well, you don’t get experience, you don’t read the rules of this thread, you’ll get a RO ban”)
- apparently, the Superpershing will also get some sort of buff along with its frontal armor nerf, to keep its winrate around 49 percent
- even if you bought the Superpershing in discount (for less than it costs now), you will still be able to sell it for full price
- developers don’t consider it a mistake that they didn’t develop one game for all three weapon types (tanks, airplanes, warships) at the same time within one platform.

Bonus: Listy (British armor buff from the World of Tanks EU forum) started writing on Overlord’s blog – he started with a historical event where a Firefly shot up 5 Panthers, definitely worth reading!

- Storm, when asked, whether World of Tanks can get such physics as on this video, Storm states that the server couldn’t handle it and without server support, there would be way too many graphic issues
- Q: “Did you nerf FCM 50t profitability?” A: “That’s not our area of expertise, sorry, that’s a matter for a psychologist”
- apparently, on RU server players are getting banned for even mentioning War Thunder
- apparently, Port won’t be taken down for rework
- when dealing with teamkills, developers (or, rather, all WG people) don’t really care “who started”
- vehicles will be rebalanced in connection with the increased accuracy “if necessery”
- details about the roaming (switching from one server to another temporarily) will be disclosed later, but there will be some restrictions, SerB states he’s not interested in crowds of noobs moving around
- KV-2 removed HEAT shells will in 8.6 be sold for silver for their purchase price
- SerB states that the thing that happens to Superpershing (armor change->removed from shops->possibility to sell it for gold) won’t be possible for other premium vehicles, unless they get changed really seriously. It will also happen according to developer discretion.

Sorry, not much else today.

Let’s look back: Operation Think Tank

Hello everyone,

today, I’d like to remind you, dear readers, of one of the best things Wargaming has ever done for tank enthusiasts: the Operation Think Tank video.

For those, who do not know about this (hard to believe, right!), a little explanation: in March 2012, Wargaming invited the top world tank historians and authors of many publications to the USA for a sort-of conference about the history of tanks and tank warfare. Those experts invited were:

Steven Zaloga
Harry Yeide
Hilary Doyle (yes, THE Hilary Doyle, author of Panzer Tracts)
David Fletcher (by far the most amusing member and British tanks expert)
Rob GriffinKenneth Estes

(for Russian players: if you are looking for a Russian armor expert in the panel, S.Zaloga covered the topic a lot, Yuri Pasholok was invited, but he couldn’t make it)

The whole event was hosted by noone else than US forum tank expert and US armor specialist, Nicholas “The Chieftain” Moran. Here, you can find more info on the authors.

If we were to use music analogy, it’s like seeing Mark Knopfler, Phil Collins, BB King and Eric Clapton perform on one stage together. The result was a wonderful show, where all sorts of matters were being discussed. Of those important to WoT players:

- does frontal transmission cause fires?
- was Jagdpanzer E-100 “Krokodil” a real project?
- the effect of spaced armor on armor protection
and many more….

It’s definitely worth watching tbh. Personally, I watched quite a few times already, some stages are even really funny. So, where can you watch it then?

0.8.6 – armor changes, update

Hello everyone,

two days ago I posted some data from one Russian post on the old web blog. A developer was kind enough to comment (in Russian) under the Russian source post. Here are his comments:

IS-6

Earlier: The miniature spaced armor strips over the tracks and the rim around the hull (violent on picture) – earlier 10mm, became 30mm
Developer comments: No. The side armor was 30mm even before and stayed 30mm.  The rim under the turret was 100mm, stayed 100mm. We removed the spaced armor, that was situated in the crevice under the turret, which was there for some reason.

Object 268

Earlier: Recieved new miniature 20mm spaced armor plates on sides.
Developer comments: not 20mm, but 30mm

SU-8

Earlier: Gun armor reduced from 50 to 30mm, frontal hull armor increased from 20 to 30mm, rear part (earlier 0) recieved 6mm armorDeveloper comments: Gun armor isn’t 30mm, but 20 and 25mm (122mm and 152mm guns). The rear part in the collission model was a little smaller – we fixed that. The frontal 30mm is historical.

Comet

Earlier: No changes
Developer comments: The first turret recieved the same armor as the analogical Cromwell and Matilda Black Prince turrets (the change was practically from 0,1mm)

Slavamakarov on garage battles

Source: http://world-of-kwg.livejournal.com/204817.html
Author: Slavamakarov

Slavamakarov is one of the developers (or producers, I still don’t understand the top structure of Wargaming, but whatever, he’s one of the important people) and in this article, he discuss the problems with garage battles implementation. For those who do not know: garage battles are battles where you send one tank after another from your garage to the battle, eg. you start with E-100, you get killed, you take T110 from your garage and get back into the same battle. This article is especially difficult to translate, because it somehow presumes the reader to have the knowledge about the garage battle mechanism they want to implement, which I don’t have.
Furthermore, what I THINK the developer has in mind is this: start at lower tier, make your way up to higher tiers as you go thru your tanks and airplanes: yes, this mode will apparently appear in WoWp too.

I’ll basically write just a summary (the way I understood it)

Slavamakarov sees three problems:

- the battles are too long, which will make noobs cry
- if you enter the battle with a team of noobs, you are stuck there until the battle is over. If you think you are stuck there, you throw the game (leave the battle) and the other players get punished by your absence.
- it’s pure hell for the MM (when someone with two tier 1′s and one tier 10 joins) and people get confused, what they have to do to win
As possible solutions, he suggests

- the first point can be solved by more complex structure of victory – for example partial victory goals (as you progress thru the tiers) within the battle and a huge reward for winning altogether. (SS: the way I understand it, it’s a bit like raiding in Warcraft – partial goals are the various lower dungeon bosses, for which you get lesser reward – and the last boss is the main goal, for which you get the biggest “loot”) And – also generally not let noobs advance past tier 5. – at second point S.Makarov states that there is no clear solution here, it would be possible ti economically punish the players for leaving, but that’s just treating the symptoms, not the cause. It is also possible to limit the garage battles to company mode only, but the question is, whether company battles actually need such a mode. As for the leavers, in connection with the “you leave – you get nothing” principle, it’s possible to implement some sort of reward accumulation. In order not to draw the battle for too long, it’s possible to implement some victory condition based on performance.
- third point: here, Slava Makarov has an idea, he will tell separately:

Garage battle, in order not to drive the matchmaker crazy and to make battle outcome predictable, takes place strictly on one level. The rewards grow rapidly with tiers. The deck size (SS: the amount of vehicles one player throws into the battle) is fixed – additional vehicle slots are never awarded. One player cannot also mix arty/anti-ground airplanes and tanks/tank destroyers in one deck. If your team kills 45 enemies within 3 deck slots, it’s a guaranteed victory, each kills brings the team closer to victory of course.
The tanks and airplanes in the decks should be different from each other – the developers don’t want players to spam KV-1S in one deck. If there are no different suitable tanks, players can put the same tank twice, but they get no reward for that. As for the anti-ground planes, apprently there will be an AA defense respawn.

Comments:

- In comments, Slavamakarov states that the game doesn’t have to be 3-slot deck only, 5 slots are also possibility. Victory condition could be like in WoWp: victory points too.
- the aim is not to bring pubbies from random battle to this mode
- it’s possible tier 8 premium vehicles will somehow be limited in this mode
- the spawnpoints: there will be a set of them, it’s possible the engine will pick the most distant one from the enemy
- prototype garage battle was tested on Karelia, but there is no set of maps already decided
